I was just wondering if the lifting of the embargo on sambar stag from India means our favorite maker will be churning out those sambar goodies of yester-year

I certainly hope so. I really prefer the look of some of the stag that Buck used to use. I scored a sambar stag 110 from the early 80's and really like the look.

Was there really an embargo??? Texas Knives and Jantz seemed to have it listed...

What about that Mastodon Stag they have listed??? Is that *real* Mastodon??? How many of them could have made it through all these centuries... Are they just lying around waiting to be harvested???

There was an Indian sambar stag embargo,it was recenly lifted and it seems there is quite a bit of mastodon/mammoth ivory around. It would be a good question in the bladesmith forums or customs,a lot of the makers have it and some very nice stuff. One thread a while back someone had a narwhal tusk for a yet undecided project, think he paid 30 or 40 thousand for it.It's said that is the most highly prized ivory!
I know there's an ivory dealer forumite around here somewhere.
I've seen them(native people) harvest it as it raised up out of the ground when the seasons changed in Siberia and think Alaska saw this on TV.Seem to remember around coastlines too,but don't know where.Gotta' Sambar handled 110 and a Fox Sambar stag,Damascus blade, linerlock made in Italy out now.The Damascus is nice but the stag is nicer on the Buck, and smaller.First post here this year,hi you guys!
:)

There really was an embargo by India.I've never seen Mastodon Stag ;) but in Russia it's a very lucritive business removing Mastodon and Mammoth from the perma frost and exporting it, all of it is 10,000 years old and older.

Read through your post too fast,I guess. There couldn't be mastodon stag, They may be selling it though.

Well, lemme see...Texas Knifemakers has "Mammoth Ivory"...and Jantz has "Mastadon Ivory"..."Aged and often fosselized"...

Oh, I see..You mean you can't have "Mastodon Stag"...because a Mastodon didn't have antlers...D'Oh!!! to me!!! :D Antlers, tusks, horns...I don't know the difference...I be a city boy... :D

Heh...Funny...Anyway...They let those tusks be sold??? Wouldn't they be archeological artifacts??? Priceless antiquities, stuff like that???

My X-Wife had both, horns and tusks. She probably shed her antlers before we got married. I should of suspected something when we went to the license agency and they gave me a hunting license instead of a marrage license!

You have the '06 catalog??? Does it show any knives with the '06 tang stamp??? :D

Thanks John,
