I recently bought a NIP, and I just finished sharpening it to needle sharpness.
I like the feel of the handle wrap, but I am not too fond of the very thick epoxy coating. I am considering removing the wrap/coating.
Some pics to enjoy. . .

Hey.... who did the wrap? That is way cool!

Great pics btw. You need to give some suggestions on your obvious photo skills bro.

I was told it came wrapped from Busse.

Thanks for the compliment, I want to build a lightbox, and take some really good ones.

I used a flourescent lamp and a trouble light- with my camera on automatic/macro/no flash. I laid a shirt across my lap and took the pics there. My camera has a flip out LCD, so I pressed the shutter until it finished auto focusing, and then moved it around until it looked right. I also increased the contrast using Photoshop.

Good pix.

I don't understand why you would want to destroy the wrapping when there are still some out here without wrapping?

Would seem to me to make more sense to trade with someone vs. destroying the wrap....

thanks,

That's true- I do kind of like it, a very secure grip.
If it is the factory wrap, I might just keep it that way.
Do you know if the wrap was an optional item?

Wow! I didn't realize the NIP was that much bigger. It was always speculated that the RIP was the leftover cutting stock from a Howling Rat... I wonder what the NIP is cut from?

Here is a comparison pic to show the size vs the RIP.

Did you ever take Eric up on getting a new RIP? The one in the pic looks like the one you ........... demolished. :D

Any tips on sharpening the point? I have a rip that needs a new tip!

I use sandpaper and a mousepad. I start with circular strokes while slowly rotating the pick, and as it comes to a point I switch to straight stropping strokes. After I reach the tip, I polish the bevel with finer and finer grits. I get it sharp enought that you cant see any light reflected on the tip, and it catches on my thumbnail.
I started off with 100 grit paper, then 220, then 320, then 400, and finished with 1500 (didn't have the right grits for the intermediate steps)

The last time I sharpened my RIP, I didn't take it to total sharpness, because I had no sheath and carried it in my back pocket

Thanks for the sharpening steps! I will definitely need to try that. Those were great pictures of you destroying...er..testing the RIP btw!

Wow killer sheath :D

Great pics! That is a cool little sheath. I need something in that size for my SK.

The wrapped nips were something discussed at the booth at Blade 2004.

Stinky and Jerry had some made up, and they were only available through the Company Store. Original talk was for Wally Hayes to do them up. Don't know if that is who ended up doing them though.

Yes, they are cut from INFI.

Nice piece man.
