While I resolved to downsize my folder collection, I also resolved to concentrate on scout patterns and fixed blade.

A Hess Knifeworks Hunter arrived in the mail today. Has most of what I like in such a knife. 1095 flat grind. Stacked leather. Much belly. And not large.

Wow that's a winner. I could see a blade like that being a very welcome friend on a long hike.

1095 will always be my hard use steel of choice. I've got super steels, and I can appreciate them. However well treated 1095 just makes for an effective, tough, and maintainable-in-the-field blade.

Congrats!

Great choice. I have a Muley with the leather handle and my praises outweigh the negatives 100 to 1. In my humble opinion Hess provides some of the best bang for the buck in the knife world. Not only are they extremely well crafted but they flat out cut. They are also based on venerable, time tested patterns that simply work.

Very fine camp and hiking fixed blade that would compliment your scout on any day of the week. [emoji1360]
