New items at Adventure Medical Kits

as with all the adventure med stuff many of there individual products are good there kits are an overpriced collection of stuff that you could put together for less money and have it more properly suited for you and you situations. IMO

In a world where the dirt-simple Doan Magnesium Firestarter is called, "gimmicky," this thing is off the charts.

It would have been cooler if they just made a excellent survival tin that is a bit larger than the Penrith/BCB/British, common size "tins." Increasing all of the dimensions by one half inch would have been great. Instead they opted for this.

They have great stuff otherwise, this thing is just a brainfart.

I'll pass on them ....most of AMK stuff is quality,I was slightly let down to see these released....

agreed but as much as i hate to say it look what time of year it is...I'm sure it will be marketed as a great stocking stuffer/gift idea for christmas.

Well it's better than nothing and for someone who isn't into bushcraft and survival stuff it can seem like a good investment

This popped up here a few months ago, I think there's also a youtube vid of this thing.

I'd rather have my Altoids tin...it's smaller and I've got more/better stuff inside. And it's cheaper. And it's inconspicuous.

Yes, Styx. I think you may have just identified the target market. I doubt it is even possible to make a survival kit that would satisfy us bushcraft types. (Even a good kit like the ESEE ones gets added to...)

There are a lot of weekend hikers and occasional backpackers that know that they SHOULD carry a survival kit, but don't have the inclination to build one from scratch. Those people are better off with a kit like this than without one.

For an intelligent person not into this stuff, they could toss it in the glove compartment or console of the car and it would help them survive. I just wonder how many people could get the most out of it that are not into this stuff. What good is snare wire to someone not "into this stuff?" Just about useless. You could get one of those The Tool Logic / Light My Fire SL3 Knives that combine a folding knife, firestarter and whistle in one wack for $30.00. I'm betting that those three items are better than their counterparts in this kit. Add a Suunto Clipper Compass, probably the best of its type for another $10-12.00 now you're up to $42.00 on the high side. Still have $18.00 to go!

For people in here, this is child's play. :D

Perhaps for someone not "into this stuff," s'kay.

No, actually, they would be better off with the The Tool Logic / Light My Fire SL3 for $30.00 and for another $27.00, the Doug Ritter Pocket Survival Pak. :D

But it will sell, no doubt.

Looks sort of Bear Grylls-ian, but everything is relative. Its better than X, but not as good as Y. You have to fill in the X and the Y. It might be the kind of thing I would buy for one of my sons to get them in the game, and then go from there.

Seems to be more gimmick than substance. I guess it is better than nothing, but for the price there are way better options. I like the idea though, just with more quality.

That's the thing guys. There are better stuff that one can get. And it's all still useless if you don't know what to do with it in the first place. A knife will for them be a knife and that's somewhat straight forward. But in case of a ferro rod, or any means of starting a fire for instance some things will just cause a "wtf" reaction. The least those packs should include is some basic info cards, sorta like ESEE gives with their products

Not really sure how I feel about these "general public" survival kits... I think they are dangerous.

I think they are dangerous in the fact that they provide a pretty great false sense of security to your average mainstream hiker - just because you carry one of these does not mean you can use it to survive, for the most part.

Shit, I'd bet good money that 90% of the people who buy these kits at REI or EMS can't even build, start and maintain a fire under normal conditions.

The flashlight and whistle are good though...

What do you think of the PSP Plus from them?

I agree with you guys. Like I said, this is an REI item. It is for people who for the most part don't know or care about putting together a kit based on their experience. This is a "oh look, a survival kit" that they buy and throw in their pack. While not what most of us would put together, if they had these items in a survival situation, they'd be in a lot better shape than if they didn't.

What do you think of the PSP Plus from them?

Well, the regular PSP is between $27.00 and $34.00. The only price I could find for the PLUS version is $80.00 (I didn't look too hard, either.)

So, for over double the cost of the regular version, you get the CRK&T little fixed blade, six (6) Katadyn Micro-Pur Tablets, a Nasco 1-liter water bag and a small LED flashlight that from the description appears to be like a Fenix single-AAA model. What does that break down to? $20.00 for the knife, $20.00 for the LED flashlight and $10.00 for the bag and tablets?

Still pretty high for what you get but I like to support the guy. :D
