I scored a few new items for my woods walking kit at last weekend's WNY meet. Between the food, gear, and knowledge shared, I met a very generous group of outdoorsfolk. My kit is build around a Maxpedition water bottle carrier w/side pouch for a first aid kit. It's nearly complete, with a water bottle, first aid kit, knife, and items for signaling and firestarting. These new items really help, and I'd like to thank everyone for thier generosity.
Here's the mini-compass keychain given to me by DBoles and Matt Boles, proudly flying the Canadian colors! I added a piece of the fatwood DBoles imported all the way from British Columbia. Dan also gave me a palm-sized chunk of elk antler. I plan to make it a part of my first firebow kit.
Here's the compass and fatwood on the kit, attached with a small carabiner. The fatwood is tucked away between the first aid pouch and the water bottle carrier.
Speaking of first aid, RescueRiley supplied me with a brand-new field dressing. Here's hoping I'll never need it. He also gave me some hemlock sap, which I plan to employ in the construction of bone fish hooks.
An extremely loud whistle. I think this came from DPKnives. It has a built-in clip.
Last but certainly not least, Never Too Sharp put together this awesome little fire kit! It has fatwood, strike anywhere matches, twine, and petroleum jelly cotton balls w/rubber tube sections. And all in an Altoids tin. Very handy.
I can't wait to hit the trail with this stuff. Thanks again guys!
