Hello I bought one of the best knives I've ever bought about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. It was a rc3 that I purchased from two wolves outdoors. I freaking love this blade slices exceptionally well, handles all my needs of cutting rope, opening packages, food prep, starting fired with my Light my fire fire steel, and also rides as a back up self defense weapon to my g23. However I ordered a Esee izula on Thursday and recieved it on Saturday from knives ship free and I love it too. My spyderco endura is going in the drawer unless I plan to be around salt water for any period of time. While I have not even had the chance to use the izula besides cutting some summer sausage for lunch I am trying to decide on my last blade as I have between 30-45 knives. Since I know it will be an Esee knife because the handles just fit my hand perfectly I am trying to decide between a junglass and a esee 5. Now to refresh your memory I have a rc3 and izula. I live in an urban environment but want a bigger knife for survival in the north central Texas region. It will be paired with the izula as this will be my new edc and the rc3 is going in the molle bag unless going down to the gulf then I will take the fallkniven f1. As the rc3 and the izula will handle my food prep and general task this blades primary task will be shelter making and self defense. Which knife out the two Junglass or esee 5 is best for this role and my needs? Note I have a bk2 and it's a great knife but I think it's too heavy I read that the esee5 is lighter. What I like about esee5 is that it's smaller under 5 1/2 inches legal in Texas for edc without the camping hunting backpacking stipulation. What I like about the junglass lighter more reach in sd situation and if move to a tropical island Jamaica, brazil, or costa rica like I plan on in the next 5 years I will have my machete already.

I have one other concern I just recieved my izula and read the directions on wrapping the handle. How safe is this practice on a blade that sees food prep and fish and game cleaning. Will I have to unwrap each time to clean or is there something else I can do to get rid of the bacteria that will get into the fibers of the cord?

Micarta scales might be a good alternative for the Izula, if cleanliness is a concern. Enjoy yer new ant. BD

izula.... meh. the words "clean enough" come to mind. I rewrap pretty frequently. as for food prep... cook it hot enough and it doesnt matter if you dip your blades in salmonella first.

as for a bug out knife, 5 over junglas.
as for having a machete in the jungle....get a nice real machete. The junglas fills a niche in the 'holy crap thats cool' market. But the lite machete is much more suited to working conditions. I like my junglas, a ton....but it doesnt fit into my workload as natually as the lite machete has.

Jamal, if you have moved to Texas give me a shout and we can meet up for a hike. As far as choosing what knife/machete for Texas let us know what environment you are looking at operating in. Texas has several. Piney woods, desert, high desert, coastal, etc.

Good point and one we stress to people all the time when it comes to road kill, rotting meat found in the woods, whatever. We come from a tradiition of only eating things that appear to be "clean" but enough fire and flame will sanitize just about anything.

I think meeting up for a hike would be great. I will pm you later. I am in Fort Worth TX. So what would that classify as north, north central or what?
