New izula and fire setup

I don't have pics yet but had a new idea for a petroleum fire starter setup. First off my new izula is fantastic and is getting some nice wood handles before too long. But back to the setup. my wife got me the goinggear.com small aluminum containers. Well they are little and can only hold about one cotton ball. What i decided to do is similar to candle designs i have seen in the past or also similar to a kudlik (inuit lamp/heatsource) Well what i did was take a cotton ball and slowly pull out fibers and spin them similar to making cordage. Once i had a very long strand I soaked this in vasaline. From here it got messy, but i started to coil this into the container and working it towards the bottom. Once i had it all in there i centered the very end and lit it. now it works just like a candle that as it burns u can pull more out as needed. Also the flame is adjustable for size depending on how far out you pull it. I have not tested a full burn but would suspect this little thing would go for hours! And with my new mischmetal it lights very easily with just one strike

I've done somthing simalar, I melted beeswax in a double boiler poured a bit into the capsule and stuck a peice of wick into it before it hardened. the result is a compact candle in a waterproof container.

Thats a neat idea. Let us know the run times when you figure it out. I'm looking forward to pictures.

By the way, I've been able to stuff 12 small Western Family cotton balls soaked in vasaline into the Aluminum Waterproof Battery Capsule (there's also a grey one). One small cotton ball is normally enough to start a fire. Can only fit two of the large cotton balls into the above mention capsules, so I normally just use the small ones.

I'm a scout leader and we did a similar thing with these same capsules. We also made kits to hold the capsules, home-made fire pistons, char cloth and firesteel... You never know what you're gonna run into ;) and it was a really fun project.

I think utilizing the cotton/vaseline as a candle is a great idea and would also like to see pics of the OP's idea here...

looks like it would be a sweet little fire starter. minus the messy part i bet it doesn't way anything and its waterproof off the container and pj so that is a great little set up and nice ingenuity on your part

Tried for burn times and it was a joke. It will take forever doing it conventionally. So i am going to do a 1" piece of cotton and see the burn time on it and just multiply it outbut needless to say it is in the hours from what i can tell. For those of you who have extra brass laying around you can do this very easily with handgun rounds. Just use the old .45 case or similar and fill with wax or petroleum and a wick. Used to do this as a little hand warmer.

I may be wrong bout would paraffin work as well? I picked up some for the wife to make candy out of and am sure there is some left over that I could use to do this. I have used a .454 case and a .500 case to make a pretty good cap holder while muzzleloader hunting. I am guessing it would make a pretty good candle set up for a Altoids can PSK.
