Looking at a small set of Ranger Beads, 3 miles.
The fire flint the kits comes with, also used the 2 split rings to be used to make a trap with. Have a photon micro light and the whistle put into the handle.

So we have a light, a whistle, paracord, a trigger for trapping, ranger beads to see how far we walked, just missing a small compass and we would be set, all in ONE with the Izula as the anchor.

I could have used the RAT FireKit on the hook and hang it off the bottom of the knife to add a the compass needed, plus tinder and have a spare battery for the flashlight as well.

This is the first time I have tried to wrap anything since I was about 10 years old. When I was younger (1976) a teenage girl used to come over and ride the pony my grandfather bought for me and my brother. She showed me how to braid things and make a key chain out of blue and yellow plastic strips, you older guys and gals like me remember those things.

Anyway, about 3 hours later (after doing and redoing the designs until I came to these), 2 minor cuts to fingers, one cut in a finger crease and 1 stab into my thigh, cutting through my jeans, here we are.

RATS are VERY unforgiving knives, you make a mistake and they will bite you, but the coin is two sided. I know that if I ever had to use my RAT for self defence it would really mess someone up, no doubt.

Just wanted to say a HUGE Thank you to Derrick and knivesshipfree.com

nice little set up... the Izula is one of my favorite knives.. mine see's a lot of use..:)

The Izula is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Already paid for itself with its usefulness in my life.

I don't get the ranger beads. How do those work?

Here you go. They're most useful at night.

When you count your pace count each full stride...i.e. if you start with your left foot count each time you step with it, not each separate step. I think it's better to learn your pace count on broken ground rather than on a track like they recommend. You'll get best results if you walk your distance both directions two or three times each and take an average,...and if you lay out a 2-300m course rather than 100m. The broken ground will give you a more accurate number as very few trails are as flat and smooth as a track. Also, if the trail is very hilly then you have to adjust the pace count to compensate. It's not a perfect system but it will get you close.

Yup, you can custom make them for any distance. I have made sets for up to 20 miles before. Most Ranger Beads you buy online are made for 3 miles.

I am lost on your count though. You have seven and six beads. How is that three miles?

I would use 9 and 2 beads for that - what is your system?

I think you can make it to whatever your pace count is...either a 1/4 mile, 100 meters, etc. My old pace-count beads had 9 (for 100 meters) and 4 (for 5 kilometers). My pace count was right at 60 paces over broken ground for a 100 meters (every left foot strike). Once I hit the 9th bead, the next 100 meters I would reset them and drop of the 1 KM beads.

If you have a good topo-map, they come in real handy for dense underbrush when you need to dog-leg around a pond or other obstacle. They're also handy as a rudimentary back-azimuth tracker if you need to retrace your steps. As mentioned, they are especially handy in hours of darkness. The last time I used mine was a few years ago, when I had to walk out to my deer stand that was almost 400 meters from where I parked the truck...worked like a charm!
