New job=new knife....help

Well I found out today that I will be moving from the street maintenance dept. to the engineering dept., more specifically a survey crew.

So new job = new knife (like I need an excuse to buy more sharp, pointy things). I was thinking some sort of SAK that might help with the day to day chores.

I do have a letherman wave that would probably fit the bill so a specific knife may not be required. In that case I still need something to celebrate my promotion.

Also if anyone has worked this type of job before I would love to hear(read) what you think that I will need as far as 'gear'.

TIA, Evan

I think that for a job like yours, it would be beneficial to have a leatherman in your bag at all times, and a folding blade (one handed opening) in your pocket. The most commonly recommended knives are the Benchmade Mini Griptilian and the Spyderco Delica. I own both, and I like the Griptilian much much more.

If you really want to celebrate your promotion, buy a Chris Reeve Small Sebenza. That's what I did when I got promoted a year ago.

Thanks for the reply RedSox.

My BM Rukus will definatly be in the pocket. The leatherman will most likely find its place on my belt when it all comes down to it.

I would love a sebbie, but thats a little outa my budget at the moment. Maybe a bark river...?

Just so long as it is within reason. I know that is relative but no huge fixed blades or anything like that. If it fits in the pocket it is all good.

A bit of information that may be helpful that I left out is this is entirely urban environment. So I wont be out in the boonies or anything like that where I would worry about getting stranded if the truck broke down or something like that.

Since it's an urban job and you already have the multitool and big folder covered, how about a tinyknife? :) Boker's CLB knives are handy, inconspicuous, and you have a lot of choices, starting with the Subcom folders and the Subcom Fixed.

I am a surveyor and carry the old style leatherman Wave and a Tramontina 18" machete. Both have served me well for many years. I cannot remember a time when I needed more. Hope this helps.

Leatherman Wave or Charge(with a better steel blade) will see to all your needs.
As a engineer (on the tools) I have used the Wave every day since it I bought it.An excellent tool to have on your belt.

Thanks to all for the responses.

I think that I will stick w/ what I got for work purposes, but I still need -want- something new. I know that this is something that I will have to decide on myself.

Thanks again, and have a good day, Evan

instead of waiting for a promotion to buy a sebenza, i bought a sebenza, now i'm waiting for a promotion.

How about a Kershaw Needs Work? Cheap (Approx. $30, if lost or loaned), One hand opening (Assisted Opening), Takes a great edge, Great ergonomics, Debatable aesthetics.
Definitely keep the Leatherman Wave on your belt too.

What about a Custom Shoppe Buck 110?

Nicer than your every day knife, made according to your choices, and for what you get, an excellent bargain.

I have never thought about a custom 110. where does one go to look into this?

Thanks to all for your input.

I you want a celebratory knife, get a decorative piece, maybe a Buck 110. Or, what I'm getting for myself (pending tomorrow's sale of a stereo) is a Kershaw 1597GRY, a beautiful knife. (JUST for the handle.) It is not only a functional piece (one-handed assisted open, 440C blade) it is a limited-run collectible. generally runs about $100 less than a sebbie.
For another price notch below that you could get a Tyrade, a limited-run kershaw done to show off their composite blade technology. Can usually be found for under $200.

Go to www.buckknives.com and go to the custom knife shop. They're great bargains for what you get. I personally prefer the large micarta seb. Bucks are a great deal but I need to have a knive right now and without thinking about it. But that's just my unbiased opinion!:p

Sorry, I should have included that. As Scott Dog mentioned, you can find them at buckinves.com, just click the "Custom Knife Shoppe" link. As a long time fan of the standard Buck 110's, I just ordered a custom 110 myself: BG-42 Steel, Asian Waterbuffalo handle scales, with nickel bolsters. I would have ordered it a week ago, but I've been going back and forth trying to decide whether I wanted the fingergrooves or not. I finally opted to skip them, but I may end up ordering up another one in the not too distant future with them. Cost for the knife was $112.
