Well I finally found myself a new job where I will actually be using my degree, and starting me out on my career path. I am starting tommorrow, and am really pretty excited to be getting into my chosen field and be earning a more livable wage before the new year.

The only problem is that I live in Queens and the position is in Manhatten, and with the transit strike it will be a huge pain to get where I need to go. I can take the LIRR which sounded like a mob scene yesterday. Either way I am left walking a good few miles between the stations and my house/job.

MeloncholyMutt lives in Queens. Maybe you can get with him and carpool. :)

Excellent news. Congratulations! Now go to it and give 'em 110%!

This strike should be over with shortly. The Judge ordered the city to garnish the paychecks of every striking worker three days wage for every day they're out. I suppose they can abuse vacation and sick leave for a few days, but it won't be to long.

I heard that it's 2 days lost wage for each day they are on strike, but whatever it is, it still sucks.

My cousin in Rego Park did the LIRR train as a substitute for the subway; a 3 hour wait in the a.m., a mere hour and a half in a scary crush at Penn Station on the way back Tuesday evening.

At least in Penn it was indoors and warm! Tuesday am as I got to the NJ Transit station before sunup it was a nice balmy 20 degrees with a lovely spanking breeze. Must have been a brutal walk on the bridges across the East River as you made your way into Manhattan.

Good luck!

Hi ErikD-

Is your location in Queens close enough that you could simply ride a bicycle to your new place of employment? If your office has a lockers and a place to shower you're in even better shape.

I went with the LIRR. It really was pretty good to be honest. I went in at 7:00AM and needed to start work at 10:00. I got there around 7:40AM. I was supposed to work until 7:00PM, but it was a slow day and with the strike I ended up leaving a bit early at 6:30PM. That left me plenty of time to catch the 7:00PM train from Penn, and get home at 8.

I think I will like the job. The guys I work with seem to be pretty nice, and the general attitude is that you get you computer fix/move/install tickets in the morning when you start. As long as you finish them and the associated paperwork by the time you leave you are good. I think, and am hoping, that this will be a good starting point for me. It is a very large user base that we are supporting, and the first project I will be assigned to is rolling out 2,500 new machines. I can also get some experience in a few different areas such as hardware, software, and server side support as I work there longer. This should put me in a good position to move on to do exactly what I would like to be doing.

I could write a book about bicycling Manhattan, but it would not sell well in polite company. :barf:
