I have been in search of a good work horse knife for more than alittle while now and I was begining to think I wouldn't find it when it was suggested I look into the rat series of knives or the ready deployment series of knives from ontario knife company. I looked at both knives and like them for different reasons, I was glad I had finally been pointed in the right direction but now was troubled that I would have to settle for just one (not much sense in getting two rather similar knives for me to take to afghanistan). Then I discovered the mind behind the ready deployment series and realized I may be able to get exactly what I wanted.

So I contacted Justin Gingrich of Ranger Knives and told him what I was looking for specific to the measurements finish and the like and he said no prob, and even better he had my knife finished in 5days!

The knife is made out of a 1/4" piece 5160 steel, has a 1 3/4" wide blade that is 6" overall length from the tip to the begining of the tan canvas micarta scales (so it is a perfect fit with the spec ops combat master sheath) and has an overall length of 11 1/2". It has been heat treated and triple tempered to 58rc and finally finished in OD epoxy base powder coat.

When I was speaking with Justin I was very specific with what I was looking for and he did not fail. I told him I wanted the spine of the knife to be straight all the way from the blade to the pommel as opposed to a more contured palm section of the knife, I wanted a saber grind and lastly a pommel like those found on the newer Ready deployment knives as well as the ones from ontario knife company.

Now last but not least the pictures:

If anyone ever has the need for a knife that is built for some work and aren't afraid to spend a little extra (and I do mean a little, this one cost me 250), drop Justin a line, he is a good guy and he'll go a long way to make sure you get what you are looking for and you are happy with it.

You can find justin and his works at: http://www.rangerknives.com/Knives/index.html or email him at: justin@rangerknives.com

5 days is outstanding. Justin is a great guy and easy to work with. Contests on finding your perfect blade!

I like it!

Justin is a great guy and his credentials aren't so bad either. He has been a great help answering many questions for me as I've been learning to make knives.

Look for a line of gents folders that he is coming out with after shot.

Awesome blade!Reminds me of a BK2 or an ESEE 5.

pretty close, when I told justin what I wanted in this knife I was really hoping it would end up looking like a cross between a rd6 and an esee 5, he accomplished just that.

Cool knife, I like my RD's and Afghan, but have wished they were sabre ground. Justin is cool, he does answer questions very fast.

He definitely is cool, I just checked my emails and he said he was starting on it on the 14th and buy the 17th he was completed, only 3 days, I told him I didn't have a terrebile lot of time before I do my predeployment training and he really pushed it through.

one intereting thing about the knife though is the more obtuse angle to the edge allowing for a chopping/ prying edge that will be harder to wear out, I don't know if it'll be sharp enough for all I need it for just yet but once I go through training with it I should have a good idea whether or not it'll need to be a little sharper (though I suspect not). If I do need it sharpened though, sharpening is free and all I have to pay is the shipping and handling. Definitely a good guy to work with A++.

seems like you could have just bought a bk2 and some micarta slabs.. or got an esee 5... and saved yourself 175 or so... dont get me wrong its a great looking blade i just dont see the design as something that would need to be made custom...it does look like a work horse though

True, it was by most peoples standard minor differences between this knife, the bk2, esee5 and an rd6 but it was worth it to me to spend the little extra to get exactly what I was looking for.
