I got a shipment from Nepal a week ago with knives made by HI's new Kamis.
Both Pala and I were more than pleased with the beautiful blades created by the new Kamis and the sheaths made by Sarki.

For a while HI struggled with new and workers coming and going without producing any products
to sell. I was depressed and not sure I could continue to support HI much longer. The old, Kamis left and we found some very talented Kamis to replace them.
We would never have found the new Kamis if the old ones hadn't left. Everything happens for a reason.

This is a new start for HI that I am positive will lead to a new level of success.
I need to support my workers and keep the schools open for their children.
My talented Kamis creating beautiful knives for your collections will make that possible.

Thank you for your continued support which helped me keep HI going in difficult times. All of you are the real heart of HI and I appreciate you.

Comments are welcome.

Auntie,

H.I will always be the best khukuri makers.
Auntie will always be the best person behind it. (do take note, Terisha).

We are very glad everything turns out to be finer than we thought.
All the trials and tribulations are worth the fight!

Uncle Bill's working his magic quietly.:)

I am quite glad that things are working out and pray for HI's continued success. In today's world, there are so very few companies out there that still adhere to such a respectable, ethical and honest business plan: One that prioritizes it's customers' and workers' well-being over mere profits. We need HI to stay around, not just for the amazing products, but for the ideas that it stands for :)

I'm not up to date, why did many of the old kamis leave?

In any case, best of luck to Himalayan Imports and the BirGorka factory. I wish great success for the new Kamis entering and I hope they carry on and improve on the great tradition of kukri, blade, and tool making.

Good karma pays dividends, and HI has some of the best karma around. I am eternally grateful to Yangdu, Pala, the kamis and Uncle Bill for all of their generosity and positve spirit.

I am very happy that the new kamis and sarkis are working out so well.

HI is the place for what I want and this means it will continue to be for a long time to come.

I'm really surprised you had trouble finding new kamis.

I'd think with the way you take care of them, they'd be beating down the doors trying to get hired.

Glad you got some new ones.

Does this mean HI is open to maybe take on some custom pieces?

hi yangdu
i would like to echo some of cpl's comments now i know h.i. is held in high regard and quite rightly so now why are some kami's leaving is it because they think the grass is greener on the other side now because the kamis
are so well looked after by h.i. i cant understand why there going elswhere
nice to know the new kami's are working out may you and h.i. continue to
prosper
best regards mick

Glad to hear that the new staff of kamis is working out Yangdu. Didn't realize that the BirGorkha/kami situation was causing you such distress...although in retrospect without kamis producing a product to sell I can see your quandary. Now with a producing group of kamis and Pala's returning to BirGorkha, I hope that your job will be much easier now. Thank you again for all of your efforts on behalf of the kamis and your customers.

Everything has it reasons...
I'm glad things are looking good and hope they will improve even more in the future.
I also hope among the new kamis there will be a new shining star like old Sarge, Bura and many others before.

I'm happy to hear HI is now running with full force again.

We call it "blood change". It's painful to change but once the fresh "blood" comes in, it refresh the whole thing.

My experience is to go a bit over-staff. It helps reduce the impact of staff leaving, also lower down the dependence on some certain individuals and create competition among them.

All the best!

Things happen as they should and people are brought into our lives for a reason. In the short time I have been on these boards I have felt a sense of compassion for a product that goes beyond simple knife sales. When you do what you love it shows in all that you do and I for one can feel it in every offering.

It seems to me that you and Bill took an idea and turned into something better than gold. You chose a path that helped others. I think that we are always rewarded in life when we put humanity over profit.

For those reasons you are already a success in life and I'm sure that your business will continue to thrive as you stick to your mission and philosophy. And there's always the fact that HI makes a dang good knife.

I was wondering what the overall situation is like in Nepal right now? This Kami retention problem seems to be across the board with many, if not all of the kukri companies having major loses.

At first glance, you would think that if the country is in turmoil then people with good jobs, like the ones at BigGorkha, would hold on to them with death grips. And yet many of them seem to be going somewhere???

The other head scratcher is that even the older "head" kamis seem to be moving on. Again, you would think they would understand better than most that in times of economic trouble, staying is the more senseable decision.

So where are they all going? It appears they are not switching to other kukri companies? And since this is a lifetime profession it isn't likely they just decided to switch careers? Any ideas???
