Hi Folks,
I treated myself to a Kershaw JYD-II as my "big" folder. Thanks for the input on an earlier thread.
This is a BIG knife for me. Wow. Heavy too.
The blade measures 3.66" (93mm) tip to handle, so it's too big for legal carry. In fact, it's too big to be a pocketknife, really. It would be a great truck/motorcycle pack knife, though, and were my state not entirely stupid it would be legal for those things and I'd use it as such.
It is thick with two full-size scales. Were I to carry it as a pocketknife I'd probably need to pull the scales off and replace the bolts with shorter ones. Has anyone tried this?
This is my first folder with a full-size handle, and WOW, what a difference it makes in feel. The handle is quite comfortable in many grips, and this large knife feels well-controlled. In fact, the only thing keeping me from ordering up the 3" version is that I've already got two knives in the 3" carry category.
The flipper action works well with a flip of the wrist, and the action is SMOOTH. The blade is sharp, well-centered, and there is no play.
What practical role does this knife fill? I'm not too sure. Anywhere I can legally carry a knife this big, I might carry a fixed blade instead. As I said, it's too big for the pocket or waistband. It could be discretely packed in a bag, I suppose.
Do I like it?
Hells yeah! I'm quite pleased. Now about that smaller one so I can use it all the time.... Hm.
Here are some comparison pictures below with the blade tips aligned.
The bk11 has a rather short handle which makes it compact, but harder to handle. It has only a 3.25" edge, but legally (in my state) it's the same size as the Kershaw with those scales. Without them who knows??
They are:
Boker Hyper (2.75")
Becker BK-11 (3.25" edge)
Kershaw JYD-II (3.66")
Becker BK-2 (5.25")
