After many months of thinking and choosing, I have:
A. joined this board
B. ordered my first HI khukuri, a Chiruwa Ang Khola

I have a khukuri that I bought several years ago at a gun show. It looks to be a WWII style. No markings, but did come with the karda and chakma. It has a brown/rust finish on it, simmilar to the finish on my old black powder rifle.

I am looking forward to owning a QUALITY khukuri. I can't wait to put it to work.

Welcome to the Cantina!
you won't regret the Chiruwa AK. It seems a little small compared to some of the monster khukuris, but it is built like a little tank and chops like a chainsaw.

Welcome, Seabee.

What size AK did you order? Whatever it is, you're going to love it.

Aardvark, it's the 16.5 in. and I think I love it already. And it's not here yet.:D I may have just caught HIKV:eek: :D

I started out with a junk khukuri, too. From a catalog, wasn't even sharpened. Boy, was I green! I envy you the feeling of holding your first good one.

I got my new Chiruwa today. It's already been through a heap of firewood...

I promise you won't be disappointed, sir!

My first HI khuk was a chiruwa AK. It's a pure cutting machine. Don't ask me how many I've bought since.

Hey, Bill!

Welcome, amigo!

This is a really great place and the blades that brought us here are really fantastic pieces of workmanship. I've been here maybe less than three weeks and already bought eight of these critters.

I'm going to slow down a bit for a while because I really like sleeping in the bed instead of on the chaise lounger on the patio (grin).

The 16.5" AK Chiruwa is an excellent start into the world of quality Khukuris. Like I said, I've got eight HI Khuks now, and every one of them are very well made and fit pretty tidily into various tactical or field niches.

My favorite is the 18" Gelbu Special, but it is followed right behind in a two-way tie by the 18" Chitlangi and 15" British Army Service. Right behind those two are the 15" and 18" Sirupatis. The 15-incher is kinda cute, but there is no doubt that this is a serious fighting knife. The 18-incher is also a serious combat knife too, though its heavier weight and farther balance make it less a "fencing" kind of fighter versus an aggressive chopper. It's fairly robust frame despite its somewhat sleek appearance suggests it would do well in a general fieldcraft role as well.

Of the remaining three, two are my kid's (15" BAS and 20" Kobra), and the last is my 2-lb 18" Ang Khola. I haven't formed very many opinions about the 18" AK except for:

1. It is a beefy brute with an incredibly intimidating blade presence. It gives one the sense that it could take down a telephone pole with a single swipe. And....

2. For some reason, the beastly thing cracks me up. I can't help grinning every time I heft it. It's like a battle-axe compressed down into a package the size of a large knife. An amazing piece indeed.

Don

Wait, one of us here doesn't have HIKV  . I'm sure he'll chime in here any minute now. Does anyone else here a strange quacking sound?

That was my first HI khuk, and the one I carry in my truck and use the most. You'll love it.

Start off using it slowly at first. "Listen" to her and she'll tell you how to use her. Don't strike too hard, let the khuk do the work. And always be aware of where all of your body parts are in case you make a glancing blow. On my chiruwa tang I had to lighly smooth the tang where the ring goes around the handle. I didn't file it off, just smoothed out the roughness.

Enjoy!

Steve

Welcome to the cantina, Seabee. You will really like the khuk you ordered. Better start saving the change from your lunch money, though.

Thank God I wasn't sipping coffee at da duck's last post or i'd be cleaning my keyboard now.

Anyone know the average order-to-recieve time frame? Yes, I know, I only ordered it yesterday.:D But I would like to have an idea as to when it should be here. And, no, I can't wait. :D :D

Bill
