New Khukuris From HI?

Forumites,

As you know, Uncle Bill and company are now travelling to Nepal.

Just to raise anticipation of Uncle Bill's arrival back home, I thought it would be stimulating to start a thread where forumites could guess what sort of surprises he may have for us khukuri knuts.

One rule, though. If you have a secret project or know of secret project(s) that is/are ongoing and will come to fruition during Uncle Bill's trip, you are not allowed to tantilize(actually, that should be torture) the rest of us with the juicy details until Uncle Bill and the project originator(s) decide it is time to "spill the beans".

Ok, lets hear your thoughts.

I don't know what ideas Uncle Bill took with him, but I would almost bet that we will all see a huge improvement in quality although in what area I don't know.

I have a thought for a khukuri that I personally want and when things settle down with all my projects I am going to carve a prototype and see if I can't get it made.
It will be in the 16" - 17" range and about 1 1/2 to 2 Lbs. I really do want a full curving khukuri. I will base it on a full arc with the handle included. I want the blade made similar to the Ganga Ram with it's wide profile. I think this one will look nice with the copper, brass, copper inlay like that one special Uncle had not long ago. I want the scabbard to be on the order of a Gangaola.
What does everyone think about one like this?

PS. I sure wish we had a spell checkur on dis board. Sum daze arr wurse thann udthers.

after things cool down I would like a matched set for a right and left hand draw. Horn handles that won't crack. along the lines of a 18"AK or WWII. The big problem is finding a belt that matches the handmade quality of the kukhris. Maybe i should look at the medievil sites.

Hmmmm, I like it, ¥vsa. Could we call it the ¥vsa Special?

Seriously, I think that your idea is something very much worth considering and if it comes to fruition, I definitely want one.

Matt,

You might want to try the following site:
http://www.tilley.com

The belts they make are excellent(I have worn one the past 11 years and it is still in good shape) Made of a single piece of leather, with excellent stitching and nice brass buckle, this is a very functional and classy belt.

Hmmm...

Bill was planning to be gone about 3 weeks.
Give him a couple days to get there, and a couple days to rest-up/ adjust the circadian rhythm.

Then a week to get started working on his karma, so he can continue much needed work on his return ( actually it only takes a second to get started on the work of years ) but getting to the part where your will lets you hear the directions...

Kozak, thank you for this nice thread to ease my withdrawal.
Just a wild guess ... a throwing khukuri that flies circling back if it miss the target! A formidable boomerang khukuri. I wonder how to catch it though, by a special mitten as showed in "Mad Max 2"?

My guess is that Uncle Bill will be introducing a 2 bladed khukuri with the handle in between two Sirupati/Kobra blades. Overall length would be 21 inches with the blades being 8 inches each and the handle portion 5 inches. This would be one interesting fighter type khukuri.

I can see more khukuris coming with carved handles and a variety of bolster and buttcap materials.

Whether new blade styles will come remains to be seen. I do think that in terms of all round blades, the Gelbu Special blade is pretty close to perfection.

My guess is that Pakcik Bill will be introducing:
  • A Rambo type Khukuri.
  • Overall length about 17" to 19".
  • A 5" wood handle.
  • A fighter type khukuri.
  • It is design for US Army supply!
NEPAL HO!

Yvsa, baloney! What do you mean carve a wood prototype blade of a true forward curving khuk with the curve continuing into the handle?

A steel blade done that way - say taken from the first batch of villagers - would be so sexy you'd have to use Kama Sutra oil on it.

So you might want to sniff any packages you get toward the end of the week of February 7th. Just so you know which package to either tear open immediately, or save to open last to build up the suspense.

( Yvsa and his cuz and I are kinda bargaining around a deal on something, if you couldn't already tell. )

Oh, and did I mention that "On Ogur" is turkic for ten arrows?(H)/on/ogur/(ian).

Well that's what National Geographic magazine says this month. VBVESEG.

PS: Just tzn, course on some rez's, just teasing comes awful close to being a blood sport.

I'm real tempted to get a Chesapeake kukri or such with a 3" blade. I think it would be great if INFI or the other 'common' steels would be used to make it.

Seriously, though, I can see Uncle Bill coming up with the Kumar Karda II with a slightly wider blade(more in the style of a semi-skinner or skinner type) as one of the offerings when he comes back. This would be just the ticket for camping, hunting, fishing, etc.

:
Rusty it just soaked in about what you said about a villager from the first batch being so sexy I would have to put Kama Sutra Oil on it.
DAMN!! I am awaiting with "baited breath." LMRRAO!!

You're right about the teazin being a blood sport. My Big Bro used too bloody me every now and then until I learned how to take it and..... to dish it out.
wink.gif

I am a bit outta practice now though. People that come here to our Sweats try to call me all kinds of names of things I ain't. I tell them I am best known as an Old Fart.ainnit? or did they use innit? or ennit? on the rez you were at?

I'd pay any amount of money to see the look on Kumar's face when Bill first walks in.

Ohhhhh ya. Definate Kodak moment. He'll need a FAST cold shower. Y'all will know fairly soon what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Yvsa: the villager from the first batch was the one I was planning to put the elk antler handle on.

It went out in the 3:45 mail this afternoon.

There is no way you would believe that it started out as one of the first batch of villagers if I hadn't told you. It is definitely some kind of curvaceous. You may end up doing that skinned down dance you were talking about a few months back.

Tell us what the KS oil did once it soaked into the water buffalo hide.

Inquiring minds want to know, what position was the khukuri in when you applied the oil?

My guess for the secret project is a kami - inspired (maybe Amercian inspired) katana! After all the kamis make swords and the market is full of katanas that aren't "battle ready" - the nearest you can get are the Shinto Katana from CAS I think (about $500 from memory) or a lesser finished katana from Kris Cutlery for about $230.

It's a bit of a streatch but we can all dream
