Hey all.

I'm new :)
I just got really interested in knives recently, and I am thinking maybe I should try out a butterfly. I just wanted to know if you guys could recommend a good beginner knife. Also, I am only 13 and don't have enough cash to buy a really expensive knife, so please recommend some affordable ones.
Also, please let me know where I could find good places to teach me how to use the knife.
By the way, my name is Josh

Welcome to the Forums....yeah a Jaguar would be fine, and dont forget "caution" :)

Have fun, hope you enjoy whatever you decide on!

Thanks for the advice man.

Jaguar LOL. It's funny because this online site just sent me a free Jaguar knife a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty sweet.

I will buy one of those jaguar balisongs.
The thing I don't understand is, the ones on that page and the ones on benchmade.com look pretty much the same, but the price difference is over $100. What's up with that?

Also, do I need any safety equipment like gloves or arm protectors? I don't want to kill myself from playing with a knife :)

LOL

Looks like someone here is just a little nosey :p
1/1/1950 is just my "default" birthday. I use it for all websites I join. But yes I am really 13, 14 this november. Maybe one of you could send me a knife for my b-day :)

Welcome club worm! About why BM's are more expensive, you will find that cheaper knives develop a "loose" feel to them after a while. Benchmades feel great and address this by using titanium handles, washers, a latch gate to keep the latch from hitting the blade, rounded handle profile, and a great quality blade. Even though all of this makes them more expensive, im not sure their production cost is near what they are charging for them. But than again BM fans are rabid and will sell their kids to get the latest.

About whether you need protective gear, visit www.balisongxtreme.com and see what clay says about taping the blade. If u tape the blade and play it safe until you are comfortable u should be alright. I would also recommend wearing shoes and at first using the knife over carpet or grass.

Happy flipping!:D :D

Do your parents know you like sharp metal objects?:D
Welcome, just play it safe so your parents don't freak and go militant and "Blame Canada.";)

32 yrs. old

I made my first balisong out of a Japanese paper fan, a old bowie blade out of a hobo knife, solder, and rivets. At the age of 10.

I'm 35 and been playin' with these things since 1982. Best thing I ever learned was to tape your blade with electrical tape and practice standing next to your bed. If you drop it it won't hurt the blade and you find it much quicker to pick it up (less strain on your back when your our age ;) ).

Welcome to the forums! They pretty much said what needed to be said. Tape the blade, be safe, and extra careful.

Thanks for all the nice replies guys.

This is only my first day, and I already feel like I fit in. Seems like I will be having a good time here with all you friendly folk.

Thank-you for welcoming me and answering my beginner questions. I still have a lot to learn, and hope you guys can teach me more and more :)

I ordered my first knife today: the Jaguar Balisong Silver. Can't wait to recieve it. I will let you all know when it comes in, so you guys can start teaching me the basics hehe.

Talk to you all later!

Welcome to the forums Club Worm. Good call with the Jaguar. One thing to remember is don't freak out if the hinge pins break after a while (a few months). You can fix it yourself with tips at www.balisongxtreme.com You replace the pins with finishing nails and it'll last you a long time. In fact, the information at www.balisongxtreme.com will keep you busy for at least a year or two. Make it your homepage.

And remember to be careful about where you decide to flip that knife around. Although it may seem harmless to you and everyone here, most people just don't get it and tend to freak. Play it safe.

Have fun flippin' man, keep the questions coming!

(wasn't Club Worm where slimey from Sesame Street used to dance?)
