I'm trying to decide on new wood scales for my 7; I plan on making them myself and have gotten started by roughing out several sets in different wood types - mostly because I have a lot of appropriately sized pieces and because if you're gonna do the setup for one, might as well do a little production run....

L-R: curly maple, sapele, 2 of cherry and 2 of black walnut.

I don't plan on stripping this one just yet, and was thinking curly maple with some aniline dye to really make it pop, but then I just found some purpleheart, zebra wood and mahogany in my pile. From what I have I think I'm going to go with the walnut or the maple (dyed, to make it darker), but I figured I'd see what y'all had to say - I know you've got opinions; this is the BeckerHead forum after all.

The Queen with her suitors:

Thanks for looking!

Those look great. I can't wait to see them finished. Personally I'd go with the walnut. I've been trying for sometime to find some dried black walnut so I can try to make a set.

i prefer darker woods. I really like cherry a lot, especially if the blade still has the coating. the red wood and black blade is just sexy

A helluva good start Mr. Granite .......I LOVE walnut....... BTW......watch out as" that might as well do a little production run "state of mind is what got me in the knife business....LOL......

Looking forward to the end result.......

In the shot where they're all supporting their queen, that sapele looks awesome. I'd lean that way.
Beautiful piece of maple, though.

Beautiful timber, I'm also a sucker for walnut, the patterns in the grain can be absolutely beautiful.

Thanks for the warning...and the kind words.

They look very nice.

Walnut looks to be the overwhelming favorite. I'm still gonna see what I can do with dye to make that maple sizzle. Thanks for everyone's input. Now for a little shop time...

I agree with the maple, although I'm really digging the grain on the sapele... Luckily you can make multiples and swap them out!

The walnut looks really nice, but I think any of your choices would make great scales. Can't wait to see what the finished product looks like!
Great work so far.
