I'm thinking of getting a ZT 551 but just not sure. I really like benchmade knives also any advice on which way to go the ZT or similar priced benchmade.

It's a very highly regarded tank of a knife, with great ergos. If that's what you want, go for it. I love mine.
I haven't tried the Contego, but I did not care for the Adamas in hand (or the look, frankly.)

The BM I would consider instead is the M390 581 Barrage. Assisted, fabulous lock, possibly better fit for my hand, but not to the same level of indestructible toughness as the ZT.
What are you looking for out of it?

I'm looking for a new edc knife to start carrying.

Can we narrow that down a bit?

Do you have a size/weight limit? Does it need to be on the thin side for you to comfortably carry it? Do you want a flipper, thumbstud, thumbhole opener? Do you have a preference regarding the materials used (both handle and blade steel)? What's your price range? etc, etc...

You gotta help us out here man.

I'm just looking for suggestions on a good edc option obviously if I'm looking into a ZT 551 then other knives in that price range would be ok I'm not familiar with all the different types of steel currently I'm carrying a protech TR3 but would like to get a different knife for edc

The ZT's are great knives but take into consideration that they are BIG. If you don't mind hauling around a lot of blade (personally, I love big folders) then go for it.

I carry a BM mini-Barrage 585. It has a 3" blade, assisted opening, and perfect for EDC. It is very tough, but not like the ZT.

What it is about the ZT 551 you like? Or is it the ZT 551 price that you like? Because there are a ton of knives in its price range of all kinds of styles and applications.

I have a Mini Grip 556
If I purchase another Benchmade, I would like to try the 746 and the 940

ZT 551 is a great knife. Limited edition, Elmax steel, superb customer support.
It is a beefy knife with grippy scales, good fit and finish. Tight lockup, smooth action.

My son lost his (#126) while serving in the Marines, which Tom from Kershaw/ZT graciously replaced FOR FREE! Now thats what I call going above and beyond the call of duty in providing customer support, don't ya think?

There are lots of great knives in that price range, I personally am not a fan of that ZT because it is bulky to carry. For something to carry every day I would go with a paramilitary 2 or even better a Southard. Top choice steel, flipper, frame lock for around 240$
