Hi All. I won a Strider GB on Ebay but now have a question about it's edge.
It was customized by it's former owner thus:
-
There are series of modifications done by a Canadian knifemaker Craig Wheatley with Mick Strider’s permission. Here is the extensive list of these mods:

· The tanto blade is now recurved; finished at 40 degrees total; great from cutting
· Tiger Striped liners (they now match the finish of the blade)
· Tiger Striped pocket clip (somewhat blue to purple finish depending on the light)

anyway on to the question. Do you think the edge heat treatment would still do the job adequately even though the edge has been 'carved out' as the pic shows? This will be a user, like all my knives, and I dont know if I should send it away for a new treatment before hard use.

Best guess?

Hey a223...

I think if it was done properly,, and believe that Craig would know how to do it properly,, then the HT shouldn't be effected...

Alot of blades are made fully heat treated and then brought down to spec by the maker to finish the knife..

Personally I think it would be fine....

Hey a223...

I should say,, as long as thers nothing funky with the knife like differential Heat Treat or anything like that...

If it were differentially heat treated,, it could have an impact on edge holding,,depending on how close to the line,,or if it's gone over the line..

But I'm no expert...

Do you know this Craig Wheatley fellow? I cannot find a reference online

Hey a223...

To be quite honest,, I'm not sure if I've done work for him.. I don't know him personally,, but have heard only good things of him....

Why not put out a feeler in Canadian Connection in the communities section here at BF.com ?

Ask him personally about the knife,,and you should get a feeling one way or another on if he knows what he's talking about....

I don't know if it's possible to re-heat treat the blade anyway..I would think you'd take a SERIOUS risk of warping it or F-ing it up for good....

Most knives that are handmade have some grinding done after they are heat treated. I did this mod the same as anyother knife I have made. The heat treat will not be affected by what I did. I actually made my AR into a sheepsfoot while doing this mod. As long as you don't heat the steel up past its temper temp than you are fine. I went slow because nobody, especially ME, did not want to F up someone Strider:D

ANy more Q feel free to email me....I put my email up in the Canadian Connection area.

Thanks Eric for bringing this to my attention.

Craig
