Hey guys. Just got to my local REI store today and noticed something interesting that I just simply couldn't pass up.
As some of you might know, Benchmade has done exclusive editions of some of their production models with REI, changing
color and steel, like with the model 530, where they ran them in blue handles. Today, I noticed they now have an exclusive
585 Mini Barrage combo edge.

Now, obviously what caught my eye was the striking green handles, but I examined the knife and found it to be in S30V, not
the regularly produced 154CM on the normal Mini Barrage. Those two things made me cave. Obviously this is an exclusive for
a retail store, so you'll have to bite the bullet and pay full price. But damn, I do not regret it at all. This knife is a bunch of firsts
for me, since my only Benchmade axis so far is a Mini Grip tanto. It is my first limited run/special edition knife, first Benchmade
axis with assist, first Osbourne design, and first colored knife, aka not black or metal scales. I love everything about the knife,
and can tell it'll be a small but heavy use edc. But I would like to know more from people who have used this knife. A few specific
questions, and then the rest is up to you:

---is the safety switch, and the safety bar that the switch piece slides over and pushes, metal or plastic? I can't tell.
---How do you like yours? What do you use it for, how long have you owned it, etc.

Thanks for reading, I hope to gain some valuable info from you guys, as I have before. - TG

Man every time i go to REI which is quite often I am always so tempted to grab this blade, I absolutely love the green they use. Glad you like the knife

Green is my favorite color, and I really like the mini-barrage. However, I'm not partial to serrated (or combo) edges, and wish the scales were G10 (or G11) instead of FRN.
To answer your questions, I don't have this, or any, Mini-Barrage - but I have had a 583SBK-1 full-size D2/G10 WARN Barrage for about 6 months now:

The blade lock appears to be metal. I flicked it off when I first opened the knife, and haven't flipped it back. The AXIS Assist mechanism holds the blades closed plenty well for me. And I don't see the sense of a one-hand opener if I have to stop and figure out how to open it each time I use it.

With the Combo edge and tanto tip, I got mine to keep in the glove box for emergency use. With the wicked axis-assist release, I got a little nervous one day when my kindergartener went searching the glove box for Altoids, and came across the knife. (Every once in a while, the girls will stay behind to "drive" while I unpack the car.) So I put a non-assisted blade there, and keep the Barrage in my toolbox for use the in the garage. So far, it has been amazing at slicing open cases of beer, and cutting paracord down to size. I don't think there's a job it can't handle, but I generally prefer drop-point blades with plain edges.

I'm going to pass on this one, and continue to E.D.C. my green, S30V, Axis, BM 940 for the time being. But, if you like the combo edge, it looks like a fantastic knife.
Thanks for pointing it out!

Yea I'm really gonna enjoy this one. green, S30V, Axis, BM 940 is next on my list, the scale design is just so damn cool.

Yes, I know I am kicking a necro-thread... :D Bumping this because about a year late I got a yen to pick one of these up. I went to one of the local REI stores and, lo and behold, they still had both the satin CE and black coated CE versions in stock. They're still priced at MSRP but there's an REI 20% member sale coming up in a few weeks.
