New knife day Benchmade 710-141... and some problems!

Hi guys, I'm the new owner of a used Benchmade 710-141 knife, Gold Class.

Love the knife, looks beautiful and feels good in the hand.

Other observations when handling the knife:

1. There is a fair amount of horizontal blade play. I have read that this is a common problem with Benchmades, but for the price of the knife I'm still surprised. I know you can tighten the pivot screw, however when doing this it made it difficult to flick open/close. Any suggestions?

2. The knife can be difficult to flick closed. It also squeaks when it gets to about 3/4 closed position. It has strong retention, so strong that it is hard to flick it closed. Should I take gun oil to any parts? Is this related to the blade play?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the amateur questions.

Will post some pictures tomorrow!

If it bugs you, send it back to BM. At the price for the gold series, you should have a pride of ownership IMHO.

Sounds like you've got a very dry and likely dirty pivot. Send it back for service or if you are comfortable doing so, take it apart, clean it and lube it. It's really not hard. Getting the pivot pin back in can be a bit tricky but nothing that a bit of time won't remedy.

pull the axis back while inserting the pivot, your welcome.

I plan on sending it back to Benchmade.

However, since I am not the original owner and did not buy it from an authorized dealer, is this something that will be a problem?

No just fill out their Life Sharp form and list the issues, then call before you send it out. Tell the CS rep about the knife and its issues. This usually yields the best results. Don't bother emailing. BM is not too good about returning emails according to numerous BFs members. Good Luck!

Totally unacceptable. As suggested above print out the Life Sharp forms, fill them out and call them. Also as mentioned above actually calling them yields much better results than emailing them. It takes days to get a return email from them if you get one at all. Sounds like your knife was bad to begin with and the previous owner just kept it in a safe probably only even opened it a few times and that was it. For what these things cost everything should be dead on perfect.

Thanks for all the input guys. I sent the knife to Benchmade and am due to receive it back tomorrow. Will keep you posted on how everything turned out.

That's too bad. It's a great looking knife. Curious to hear updates. Hope it all pans out well for you.
