Hey all, I am new to this forum but thought you guys over here would be the best to ask.

I am working on a bushcraft type knife design and am unsure of some acceptable/desirable dimensions for a medium to heavy duty use knife. Overall is 10.750" with a blade length of 6.00". blade profile is 1.50" tall. I am wondering what would be a good thickness for a knife like this with a scandi grind? I am leaning towards 0.1875" but am curious of pros and cons for different thicknesses.

Many thanks.

If the bevel comes up a little higher on the blade I think .187 would be fine but if you want to keep the bevel shorter towrds the edge, it might get a little thick in.187 and you may want to go down to .125. The nice thing is you can easily draw out what you want and make a decision from there. .125 thick though would suit a Bushcraft knife just fine for everything short of prybar use.

I agree with Bill. I like something along the lines of .125 thick or so. .160 is better for a knife you might treat roughly. Anything thicker than that is overkill for a Scandi grind, IMO. The blades I've seen that are .1875 thick with Scandi grinds are too thick to make me happy.

well thanks guys. I think you are right in that .125 might be a better choice. I have it layed out with the grind going about 33% of the height. I don't have any first hand experience with knives having scandi grinds so if there are any tips or features you would like to see in a knife of this size, lets hear it.
