If you are seriously going to get into large choppers, here are some tools to make your life MUCH easier. A 12 speed benchtop drill press. A 6" disc/4"x36" belt sander. A 1"x30" belt sander. (all with an assortment of belts/grits). A Dremel Tool with a large variety of attatchments. I use the drill press for making lanyard holes & choils. I use the disc/belt sander to re-profile the edge of a blade quickly &/or change the tip/point. I use the belt sander for sharpening quickly. I use the Dremel Tool for choils & jimping. Other tools are an assortment of mini/micro screw driver sets with torx drivers (to tighten the micro torx screws on Gerber Handles). If i would have had these tools when i started, it would have saved me a LOT of time & aggrivation. I damn near wore out a GatCo deluxe diamond sharpening kit before i got these. I can now get a large chopper & even if it is totally dull or uneven grind or i want to re-profile it or add a lanyard hole- i can do it in a matter of minutes, instead of days or hours, wearing out my good diamond sharpeners & my patience.
I got most of the above tools at the H F China store. They work fine for what i use them for, in fact, they work GREAT. I always get them on super sale. My store no longer lets me use my 20% coupon in conjunction with the sale. The used to though. The Dremel i got from a major Home supply store. I love that tool as well.
Volunteer to sharpen friends & families large choppers, machetes & axes. You will get good in no time.
This is just a post for helpful suggestions for new large knife/chopper enthusiasts, to maybe save them some of the grief i went through in the last 3 years. If i had to do again, i think i would have bought the tools first, then started with my knife collection. Nothing more, nothing less. Hope this helps some one out.
