I just picked up this little fella today, and thus far, I have to say I’m pretty impressed. Sharp as sharp out of the box, tactile, grippy handle, and for its size, really light. It’s already helped with supper today (die, potatoes, die!), and I’m looking forward to putting it through the rest of its paces.

The edges of the handle around the blade slot are a bit sharp and bite my fingers somewhat with a tight grip. Has anyone else noticed this? I think a little sandpaper to round off the edges will take care of it.

I was surprised when I opened the box and saw that there was no thumb stud. The tang stamp tells me that this is a 2016 model. Anyone know when Buck added the thumb stud?

I may be wrong but I think Buck makes some models without the stud to satisfy the requirements that other countries have on knives with thumb studs.
For instance the new Buck slim models at retail stores in Canada only have the nail nick.

Curious. On mine, the Buck stamp and anvil are right where the thumb stud would go, so it’s not a defect.

And come to think of it, that Canada Customs ruling only came into effect in January 2018, so a 2016 knife would not have been manufactured with that in mind.

The plot thickens.

I've been researching a lot of those things, found the answers, forgot them. But yeah it goes back a few years and I can't answer for Buck but they probably at one time had a few customs stops that probably cost a lot of money for Buck. Better to play it safe and just remove the studs. I've had a couple of "international" versions that I picked up from the worlds #3 top employer. I think it was the spitfire and the bantam, both had nicks instead of studs or a nick instead of a thumb hole.

Super Nice collection of Spitfires Makael!! Yes Sir!!!

The standard Spitfire with the thumb hole is still available for sale in Canada.

Just drill a big hole in the blade and be done with it?:eek::eek:
Amazing what a cut-off screw head and a dab of superglue will do!

that's one way to do it.

I dont mind 2 handed opening on that knife. kinda like the Canadian version just cause. I only have an American version myself.

Sorry, meant to ask what superglue you recomend? I got like a million screws....
I used LePage’s Ultra Gel. I’ve bonded metal to metal with it before, and it’s held up pretty good so far. It does make a permanent bond, and probably voids Buck’s warranty. You also gotta make sure that you get it in the right place the first time, because it sets real quick.

Wow that’s scary. Placement on a 112 or 110 would be a guess. The blades don’t open as light and smooth as some of the modern offerings by Buck. If i attempt it it will probably be on a 112LT.

Could probably use the 112 slim as a guid for stud placement
That could work. I have a 110 LT and the spring on it is strong enough that I’d worry about snap-back and consequent loss of digits if your thumb slipped when opening it. *shudder*
