How is it going everyone? I am currently looking for a new knife for my father. Every few years I give him a new knife to freshen his carry up. The last couple of times I have gifted him a knife I have given him case knives. I have no problem with case knives as a whole, but honestly I do not feel that the quality to price ratio is very good- at least in samples i recieved. I gave him a cheetah cub first, with purple bone handles, and then the next knife was a beautiful MOP mini copperlock. The copperlock is gorgeous, but honestly had I paid for that knife I would have been severely disappointed. I realize it was probably intended more to be collected but it should still be usable. He asked me to sharpen it for him and realized from the factory the edge geometry was horrible. The bevel was so high on one side, and so low on the other that the tip has literally a bend towards the tip that forces it the opposite direction of the over sharpened side. In all honesty I dont want to reprofile it for fear it may lose the tip of the knife, thats how bad it is.
So Im thinking he could use a new knife, and I started looking. Im sure he doesnt need a new knife, but I want to get him a nice gift regardless just as a little token of appreciation. I was going to get him a Schatt and Morgan last year but I passed on it at the time. So here I am, searching for a knife to gift him.
He has carried everything from stockmans to buck 110's, and even an older clipit endura in ats-55. The model I found that I think he would enjoy is a Northfield #72. So I have spent the last couple days searching for a #72 to get him, and of course all I can find is the model with the spearpoint blade. I dig the way it looks, but I know that the clip point is the better choice. Though bigger than the previous blades I got him I dont think its too big.
So my issue is, does anyone know where I could find a clip point model in stock, preferable with stag handles of some sort, or can someone tell me when production will (might?) start on this model again? I would really like to find it. Also can anyone recommend me a similar knife? Lockback would be good, though Im sure its not completely necessary. Im thinking carbon steel over stainless, clip point, and a little bigger than the mini copperlock and cheetah, though the same size would work also. I would like to avoid case, and d2 or ats-34 is really not too desirable. Hes very utilitarian with his tools, and these steels are just a little too specialized for the use i see him doing. I really just want to get him a nicely finished knife that he will appreciate. Sorry if I was a little long winded, but I figure thats better than being too short, and thanks in advance for any help!
