We are headed to New Zealand in the summer to visit my wife's parents.
I'm thinking about buying her father (70) a pocket knife.
Excluding custom's and high end stuff, what is a brand that isn't as accessible over there? He's a tinkerer and love building things. Just built a kayak. I know NZ has some restrictive laws, but he wouldn't be carrying it.

Best figure out what you can even bring into the country , and what he can legally own , first off . ;)

Nothing double edged. Bear in mind the exchange rate between NZ dollar and US dollar. This means that pretty much anything that is reasonably priced in the US is hideously overpriced when it hits NZ. So anything you bring is going to be a bargain at this end. We have pretty good access to SAKS. Maybe a Boker tech tool if you are looking for multi function. Otherwise something classic from Case.

I just got one of these kits . Very impressed with everything included .

The knife is pretty small and hard to imagine a legal problem with it . But IDK .

Google knife laws in New Zealand.

Then plan to get him something else.

This from Google AI:
New Zealand law prohibits carrying or possessing knives in public without a reasonable excuse. It also prohibits importing knives that are considered offensive weapons.

Penalties

  • The Summary Offences Act (s13A) allows for a fine of up to $2,000 or imprisonment for up to three months for possessing a knife in public without a reasonable excuse.
  • The Crimes Act (s202A) allows for imprisonment for up to two years for carrying a knife as an offensive weapon in public.
Prohibited knives

  • Knives with a spring mechanism that produces the blade
    • Double-edged blades with each edge mirroring the other
    • Knuckledusters
    • Swordsticks
    • Any weapon disguised to give the appearance of another article
    • Knives that open automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife
Carrying knives at an airport
    • Possession of prohibited knives at an airport can result in arrest, imprisonment, a warning from the NZ Police, or missing your flight.
    • Knives with blades more than 6cm long must be carried in checked-in luggage.
    • Knives with blades less than 6cm can be taken in carry-on bags.
