One style of knife that I collect is what I would call "personal/utility"--a fixed blade knife 3" or under, tough and simple yet attractive, that can be used for a variety of purposes. I was looking for a new knife to add to my collection, and noticed that Kevin Pensinger of The Edge Equipment (a fellow forumite who stocks knives by notable makers Ralph, Blackwood, Fitch, Lamey, and others) had added Jerome Anders to his lineup. I had met Kevin at a Chicago knifeshow and was impressed with the knives he carried, so when I saw that his website encouraged special orders, I thought I would take the plunge. I specified the size and gave a rough idea of the style I wanted; we discussed handle material and other options.
Kevin is very friendly, helpful, and extremely attentive to the customer's needs at every level of the "I want a new knife" process, from design to keeping in touch while the knife is being made to the shipping! Total turnaround time was under 4 weeks.
The maker of this knife is ABS bladesmith Jerome Anders, student and son of Mastersmith David Anders. The knife is a drop point, flat grind, hidden tang style, 6.5" OAL, with a 2.5" blade and a 2.25" edge. The steel is 3/16" stock, forged and differentially quenched 1084. The handle material is a beautiful piece of ironwood with a nickel silver bolster, a mosaic pin, and attractive spacers including what appears to be padauk or tulipwood. The knife came with a sturdy and well-made leather belt sheath that holds the blade firmly in place. The knife fits my hand very well and is comfortable to use. Plenty o' sharp! The blade grind is clean and symmetrical, without any rough spots, grind marks or scratches. The blade meets the bolster with no gaps or spaces. Jerome clearly paid attention to details of fit & finish. The knife is exactly what I wanted and more; the unique embellishments and maker's style were an extra plus!
The price was an absolute bargain for what I got, and is comparable to the prices of the other knifes that can be seen on the maker's webpage. I am very pleased with this knife, and would not hesitate to recommend Jerome Anders as a maker to anyone who is looking for an attractive, hard-using knife. He is "farther down the road to perfect" after under two years of knifemaking than many makers who have been working for far longer than he has!
