New Knife Law in England?

Anyone heard abut some new law in England that would require all blades to have a rounded point? I was listening to a talk/news show this morning and the topic came up. The guys on the show didn't have much info and made a few snide remarks and took calls from listeners who knew even less......

So: is this really happening? Any details?

Since all guns are banned in England, perps have become more brazen in home invasions.

Lord forbid you try to defend yourself - you wind up in prison like Tony Martin who was sentenced to life in prison for defending himself against scumbags who broke into his home in 1999.

Banning sharp ended knives is just another unwitting experiment in protecting the livelyhood of criminal predators.

Here is a NYTimes story (free registration required) on the proposed law. It's f'ing hilarious. Then again, I shouldn't joke about this, since in my home town Swiss Army knives are now worthy of a $600 fine! (wtf?)

Selected quotes:

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, asked, "Are they going to have everybody using plastic knives and forks and spoons in their own homes, like they do in airlines?"
--
Peter Hamm, a spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which supports gun control, joked, "Can sharp stick control be far behind?"
--
An American chef, however, disagreed with the proposal. "This is yet another sign of the coming apocalypse," said Anthony Bourdain, the executive chef at Les Halles and the author of "Kitchen Confidential."

You know that the law is truly dumb when even a gun control group mocks it.

I live in the UK and the first i heard of this was on these forums. I doubt anything will come of it hopefully. The UK is the ultimate nanny state, swiss army knives, fireworks, oil based paint, you name it comes under the governmet scrutiny- let alone any type of firearms

1669!!! Holy mother of knives - I wonder if France noticed a substantial decrease in crime after that decree.

just to correct the misconception that guns are all illegal here in the UK...;

Friend just bought a nice rifle the other day to add to her collection.
You can also own shotguns and have them locked in your house.
There are restrictions. They are working on making it a police state.

I did see a number of signs in London advertising shotguns. I imagine that they're popular to keep for defense. What about hunting?

I stand corrected - thanks for clarifying the UK law from one who knows.
Correct me if I'm wrong (and for everyone elses benefit) but isn't it illegal to use a rifle or shotgun for self-defense over there?

Hunting is popular with country folk here.. deer, pheasants, rabbits and the like. You can shoot on your property, on anothers if the landowner gives you permission or on a game reserve. Handguns are banned which makes it funny as the british handgun squad cant actually have guns while they are training to compete for the olympics or other games LOL. You might be allowed to use a gun to defend your home but of course that would be dependant on the circumstances.

People in the cities everywhere deal with weapons differently than country folk eh ;').
