When Uncle Bill last visited with the Kami's he asked them to mark all the knives with UB after he passed on. From now on, all knives we get should be marked with UB on one side and the kami mark on the other side. There are still many blades in stock without the new mark that will be used to fill orders as necessary.

I hope this clears up any confusion and I won't have to type that into the sales threads all the time. :)

That's great Yandgu. I think it adds to the knives as they do it very neatly and it is a fitting tribute. I do wish that they would forgo the ugly "L.B." and "S.B." and "K.M." markings in favor of the beautiful script that they use on the Villagers. Their individual sun and moon and cross, etc. markings are very nice as well.

But at this point all mine have them of course (except for the Villagers and the Sgt. Karka knives) so it's just a wish for the future.

I think it's a marking thing as they take justifiable pride in their hard work, but the script is perfect in it's own right, along with the "H.I." script markings on the blades, their own signs, and now the "U.B." on the back side. They don't need the other.

Reminds me of when my wife got me a book embosser 20 years ago. I ran around embossing everything; beautiful leather first editions, 100 year old collectibles, everything. Now I look at them and groan! What a freakin' idiot! STUPID!!! I decreased the value of some of my books by 30% by doing that, not to mention making them look damned ugly in most cases. It's like taking an engraver to the side of your revolver and carving in your initials. I haven't done that to my books in years; book plates are fine, embossers are forever.

(FYI, believe it or not a 1st ed. of Clancy's "Hunt for Red October" from 1984 is easily worth $1500. He was just starting out at the time as an unknown first author so very few were sold. I bought one just for something to read in '84 for $14.95 at the local bookstore and kept it mint. Then happily embossed it! Showed it to a dealer last year who was slobbering all over it till he saw my seal on the fly page and promptly dropped his price by $400! Oh, well, all I can say is it seemed like a good idea at the time. The irony is that if I become very famous, the embossed seal will actually ADD a ton to the value, but that is not very likely! :D So who knows? Maybe the "L.B." on Bura's knives will be desirable some day? And then again... )

Sorry for the slight OT.

Regards,

Norm

UB. I like it. I'm going to pronounce it: ew-b. That's just me. I like the idea of a little ub, long sound, on every blade. The Eye of Shiva is no longer alone. UB is with us, he on steel, he approves.

I've noticed the little sun with rays coming from all four directions. Does anyone know what this means? This seems to be in addition to the normal Kami sign.

Norm, I remember you like wood handled BAS. I've got to post a pic of my special BAS/Hanshee catch from a couple weeks ago: the one with the triple dot cho. It's a Villager, and marked "U.B." in Devangari script .... and when I put Ballistol on that dry wood handle, a flame-like grain came out. Add that to the all steel fittings and it's a real one of a kinder at this point.

Thanks for the information, Yangdu. It's nice to know Bill wanted to have a personal touch on the new khukuris.

munk, this little sign has been on all the khukuris made late 2004-present, even Villagers. I am of the opinion it indicated the kami's team of helpers, but am not sure. Anybody can confirm?

Will try to take pix of special BAS and this one other special, special, rare, incredible, beautiful, wicked, fast-handling snag from Friday's deals: hint hdwrlover got one the week before.

Somehow Friday's catch got to my house Monday afternoon! Wow! Thanks, again, Yangdu!

BTTT on the subject of the "New Mexico" helpers? marks...

Bro Nasty just wrote on the "Foxy Folly 6/5" thread:

I've had the opinion for a while that the New Mexico symbol was a mark for the apprentices/helpers. The symbol reminds me of a table...many individuals supporting one central piece.

I believe that blades with that mark are the result of a particular kami's personal team in which the lead kami does the critical work while they do the time consuming stuff.

So a "Bura crescent moon" blade would be his work, while a "Bura crescent moon/New Mexico" would be a team effort.

If true...it might help to explain why their stuff has been getting better...the helpers are learning and gaining their own skills.

We're both guessing the same thing: are the Kamis helpers from New Mexico?
Or does this mark mean something else? Enquiring minds want to know....

[thread hijack] I have one of those! I don't know if it's the first printing, but it's definitely a Naval Institute Press printing (before he took off with a major publisher). It's still in my parents' bookcase ... I think.

*feels dizzy*

Just hope it's a first printing, that's all.

You might be able to complete your collection...

You *have* been sending Mother's Day and Father's Day cards regularly, haven't you?

For some reason, they still seem to like me. :)
