Ok, I'm new here and dont want to rock any boats if I'm asking a question thats already been asked. I'm with the Poe-Poe (local slang for Police) and I'm wondering if anyone has designed a safety retention sheath for a fixed bladed knife. Our holsters are up to around 4 retentions now. I'd like to carry a fixed bladed knife but dont want some bad guy grabbing it from me in a scrap. I've thought of making a sheath and knife set up but dont have the time (or skill for that matter). Whaddya think? Any info?

Ryan, that depends on the size of the knife you want to carry and the kind of access you need, like how fast you might want to get it out in a tactical situation, or just for utility.

For example, I have a hunting knife that comes in a leather sheath with a flap over the top of the handle, which is pretty secure. But if I wanted more security, I might get an IWB rig -- "inside the waistband" -- and wear it SOB -- "at the small of the back". With the handle tucked up under a vest, it wouldn't even be visible till I pulled it out. Not the swiftest access, but secure. :)

Typical of many large fixed blades is a strap that snaps around the handle, and another strap that snaps diagonally across the guard onto the sheath itself. Depending on the strength of the snaps, you may have a hard time releasing them yourself !!

By the way, don't worry about asking one of the standard questions around here. The worst that can happen is someone will tell you to do a search  and the next worst is someone will do the search for you and give you fifty or more old threads to read through ... After all that you will find that some sheathmaker has just come up with something new none of us ever saw before that fits your needs perfectly. :D

I hope some of our many law enforcement guys see this thread. They've been through it already.

Thanks a lot for the response. My compliments on the forum. It's interesting to see such a well rounded group thoughout, and so many different collecting specialties. Awesome.
Best Regards,
Ryan

Hello Ten8,

I can think of a few knives that come with "locking" systems:

The Kellam Ranger Puuko

The Timberline Zambezi (designed by custom maker Greg Lightfoot)

and the guard on the new Chris Reeve Nkonka acts as a retention device

I should add that any knife/sheath that is classified as "jump qualified" (as in parachute jump) MUST have at least two retention devices...so this is something to look for...

If you can't find what you want, then I'm sure James Piorek (www.bladerigger.com) can make it for you!

TOPS has some knives that are jump qualified that have a pin attached to the sheath that runs through a hole near the butt of the handle. A Bad Guy would have trouble using the knife without first pulling the pin.

Good luck finding what you need!

Oh, do a search (hehe) for Normark (forumite here) or On/Scene Tactical (on the web) and send him an e-mail. He's a wizard with kydex and he could probably rig something up for you.

Hi 10-8...

Most of the Coppers I've done work for that carry on duty have been blades that are concealed..

This is not to say that I can't make a sheath for outside the pants,,just has to be done in the right way..

The best way in my opinion, without making something overly cumbersome is to disguise the knife as something else,, or hide it behind something...

You'll probably be wanting something that is quick for you to access, but not be seen by the general public..

First the blade!
What kind of blade..
Finding the right knife is half the battle..

drop me a note if you'd like to talk about it..

Eric....
