Ok, Well Im 17 and I live in idaho, So I got a few cheapie knives I use for basic stuff, well I got a early peek at one of my christmas gifts, my parents bought me a USMC Fighter Ka-bar and now I can't wait till christmas, thing is I use knives to max, wood work, cutting, even kitchen chores, I cut alot of rubber hoses and some are pretty thick stuff, Well most of my knives dull very quick, And I got rougly 40 $ to buy me a good sharpener kit, So what would keep a nice *and I mean razor * edge on a brand new usmc fighter ka-bar?

Also, I would like to find a good sheath for the ka-bar that is horizontal, not for in town carry * I work on a ranch, and on my own land* I just always enjoyed a horizontal sheath, are there any for the ka-bar?

...many here and elsewhere favor the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I like mine.
A word on the "razor" edge though.....many times a "razor" edge isn't best...depends on the material being cut. My advice would be to do some searchs here and elsewhere and see what different people say about their favorite sharpening systems as well as learn what different types of edges are best suited for. Sometimes a razor edge won't hold up as long as a "duller" one.
Good luck in your education here.......believe me there's a wealth of knowledge here, all accessible through proper searching!

get a sharpmaker, if ya add a DMT duofold w/a coarse and fine edge, ya really wouldnt ever need anything else imho.

the edge pros work good also, but are $100, and i dont really like the clamp on sharpeners, too easy to scratch the blade, and just a hassle to use.

ya know, for the $$ its hard to beat a sharpmaker, they work well on most any blade, work well when the knife is dull, good for getting the really keen edge also, doesnt take too long, ANYONE can use it (my wife touches up the kitchen knifes now, i rest my case), pretty hard to beat i tell ya.........

edited to add - and i have had a few sharpening systems too, ie edgepro, gatco, crockstix, lotsa diff stones, lansky,

hi trilan,

i agree with larry's statement about the spyderco sharpmaker. with this item you can give your knives either a 40° edge or a 30° edge. for my edc knife - a spyderco delica - i prefer the 40° angle, because it holds the edge better (longer). for my spyderco endura, which i always have in my car, i prefer the sharper 30° angle, because it is not so often in use. but if i have to use it, i wanna make sure it is as sharp as it can gets.

nevertheless, even with the 40° edge a knife is very sharp, i'm able to shave the hairs off my arms or legs without problems.

the only thing i might can complain about the spyderco sharpmaker is, that if you not careful, you can round the tip of your knife very fast. it's easy to slip when you put some pressure on the blade and make the stroke too fast, so watch out for the last few millimeters.

otherwise, its a great (and easy to handle especially for beginners) sharpenig tool, i can highly recommend it.

Ok, slightly off topic but dont wanna make another topic Just a need a few answer for anyways.

Well I googled for idaho state carry laws, I think I can carry my ka-bar sheathed, and concealed *which I prefer* on my land, land of a friend or employer with consent, and in town or other public place, aslong as im with my parents who consent to me carrying. is that correct? and when can I carry my ka-bar legally by myself?

Oh by the way im 17, and 3 months 1 week today.

I would get the round version of the Sharp Maker which is available at A.G. Russell's or KnifeCenter. They are usually called Crock Sticks. I have both the Spyderco Sharp Maker and a few sets of the Crock Sticks and overall I prefer the round sticks. These usually sell for about $35.00...Ed.

I've been sharpening just about 15yrs. started and still do freehand. My entire freehand setup is about 40cdn(2 combo stones(200/300 and 500/800), strop with veritas green, and 80 to 1500 sandpaper)... I also have a 204(spyderco sharpmaker) and 303mf(spyderco doublestuff). the 204 only gets used on serrations.
