I'm looking for a new knife. Price range up to $120. Small, fixed blade knife with long lasting blade. I live in Colorado so I'm sure I'll be using it for all kinds of outdoor activities from camping to hunting and whatever else they have to do.

I don't know much about knives but I have friends who are obsessed and they got me into it so this is my first post. If you have any suggestions for a good quality knife that meets my standards, please, let me know what you find. Thanks a lot...

This is probably way off, because it's not small by any means, but a lot of folks aren't familiar with khukuri.

It replaced a lot of my camping equipment....I do carry a little 15 dollar STIFF KISS from CRKT for precision work too, but for machete and axe duties, the khukuri is my choice.

Ahhh, the khukuri! Dear to my heart! I'm working on growing my collection, no doubt! Great knives!

However, he did say small fixed blades. I'd like a definition of "small". If it's relative to the khukuri, that's most knives. Then, I'd personally go for a SOG Seal 2000. Durable, robust, tactical and at the same time multi-functional. It retails for over $150 but you can easily pick one up under $120 online.

If 7" is too big by your definition, I'd downsize to an equivalent knife, the SOG Seal Pup.

I looked at the SOG series. They are some nice knives. They are the only ones I know of but I'm wondering if there are others. The 7 incher is a reasonable size for the use it will get. I'm going to look up the SOG Seal 2000. The Khukuri is a little overkill in terms of size and deadlyness for what I need. It's a crazy looking knife though. I'd never want to have my first encounter with it in a dark alley...

I just looked up the SOG Seal 2000 and there was a lot about blade retention and how it wore down after a few cuts of a hemp rope to where it was not sharp enough to cut paper. I currently own a M16, and BM 41MC butterfly knife and with this new knife I'll need something to sharpen them with.... any suggestions to go with my knife?

Ontario Rat 3
I can't speak for this website service wise But they have it for $73

D2 steel, micarta handle, kydex sheath. Excelent quality knife.

Another to look at is the Benchmade Nimravus or nimravus cub. They sell for around $85. 154cm steel, G10 handles I think. Also Kydex sheath.

If you want to go custom You might find Entrek has a few
knives in your price range.

Fallkniven F-1 is a drop point hunter style knife for around $100. laminated steel. Made in Sweden

Edited to add,
With a knife with a blade around 4 inches or less the Lansky or DMT sharpening systems are ideal and will keep your blades sharp with the minimum of effort. And do it for around $25

Also check with www.razorback-knives.com Scott Gossman makes a great knife. I tiny bit more than you said you wanted to spend, but not much. I have one and they will last a lifetime. If you click on Gallery on his site, the first one on the top has about a 2 3/4" blade and it is built like a friggin' tank.

Swamp Rat Howling Rat or Fallkniven F1.

Buy a stone from the local hardware store and practice on a $2 knife until you need to sharpen your good knife. Freehand sharpening is a skill you will have for life.

Bark River makes some excellent fixed blade knives at reasonable prices and their customer service is top shelf. I recently bought a Wolf River model w/great looking stabilized amboynia burl model for use as a small camp/utility knife. ($114 bucks at knifeworks.com)

Yep, took the words right out of my mouth, lots of models in the Bark River line that fit your needs and price range and a nice selection of handle materials as well. Buy a Bark River you'll love it.

Fallkniven is headquartered in Sweden, but the knives are manufactured under contract in Japan.

USAFSP mentioned Razorback Knives. Scott is a great knifemaker and a helluva nice guy. I'm lucky, he lives down the road from me, and we can meet at the local school to talk knives, or for him to talk and me to salivate over his knives and dream about ordering one of his camp knives, but I digress. One of his hunters cost me $180, but it was worth it. The first time I held one I was put off by the beefy handle, but after using it for a while, most of my other fixed blades just sit in the shelf. Also, he makes his stuff to be used. He takes a lot of pride in people actually using his pieces, and always wants to hear reviews.

If 180 is too high, and you want a very good knife, check on here for Swamp Rat or Benchmade fixed blades. I have two small Benchmades, the Nimravus Cub and the Outbounder. The Nimravus Cub is my new BOB blade, and has not failed me yet. The Outbounder is too nice to use, yet. The only Swamp Rat I own is the Bog Dog in SR101, and that is a great knife as well. More to your liking, it not only has a great blade, but the handle is ergonomic and the choil, while maybe a little big IMHO looks wise, it feels right in the hand, where it really counts.

I haven't done any specific tests on either my Razorback hunter, Nimravus Cub, Outbounder or Bog Dog, but they are my favorite fixed blades, and have performed in every task I threw at them.
