Just how important is it to have a guard to keep your hand from sliding onto the blade? If it is of such, then how come not a whole lot of knives are outfitted with them? Im considering purchasing a new knife and this time around my greatest must-haves are "wave" blades and a proper hand stop. Utility use for the blade will never go away, but its primarily a defensive tool for me. Any suggestions?

Wave blades are not really all that important to me because of the
added cost it adds to the knife. The best folder that opens with a snap
and offers needed finger protection is the CRKT Desert Cruiser, although
any M16- or M21-series knife also keeps your fingers secure.

One of my favorite folders of all time is the CRKT M16-14LE. Opens like
lightning, has a sleek black tanto blade and black aluminum handles. If
you don't like tantos, the M21-04 or -14 offers a beautiful spear point
(the new M18 is identical, but black).

Yes. Find out what your trainer or sensei suggests and get that. And if you do not have a trainder or sensei teaching you how to use the knife, drop the idea of using it for self defence.
