I am in the market for a new folding knife and was leaning towards a gerber covert. wondered if anyone had any better suggestions

Hmm. The Covert is a fairly unique item, a folding version of the Applegate-Fairbarn knife.

If something about the aesthetics of the knife work for you, then go for it. If what you are looking for is a folding "fighting knife", there are alternatives, albeit ones with less shapely profiles. Microtech, SOG, and Cold Steel make folders with deeply swedged spines. Microtech are generally regarded as the highest quality, with Cold Steel and SOG being about equal in quality, although variable in cost. There are others if you do some digging.

You may find more knowledgeable people if you post in General Knife Discussion....
