just got back from thr g&k show...picked up a spyderco native for $40
real nice knife..any comments on this knife

I've heard it called the evil brother of the Delica, I have one of the first ones in 440A steel which I've been told was made by Camillus for Spyderco, my brother has one in 440V, I don't know what are the newer ones made of, probably VG10.

Some people like them a lot, I find it comfortable in a saber grip but not in any other, it's a fine knife, enjoy it.

Unlike some other folks, I find the Native to be ergonomically terrific but aesthetically kind of blah. And I actually like the function-first aesthetics of almost all Spydies.

I picked up a Native III at the SFO for $20. I like VG-10 at least as much as S30V, and I like the ergonomics of the Native III, so that was a no-brainer.

It's one of those tough, do-it-all knives that could talk you out of getting a bunch of others because you don't really need them. Just don't listen to it. Save up for a Paramilitary.

Was it a second or something? Why was it so cheap?

Yes, but it was one of those seconds where you can't figure out why in the world it's a second. :) I also have a Chinook I that falls into the same category. I won't tell you how much I paid for that one, or you'll cry.

I did get a Lil' Temp second that shows more obvious "second characteristics." Still a great knife.

The Native can be had in S30V. That's the new version. Same handle as the Camillus-made ones, and 440V ones. Native III has the same profile, but the handle shape is more rounded, and has been dubbed Native 3D, IIRC. I prefer S30V, but would love to see it in the 3D handle.

I've owned several Natives in the past, and regretted giving them away, so the S30V version is not getting away from me. I got a great deal on mine when they first started using S30V, and $40 brought it home from ebay. Be warned, though. The "First Generation" Natives are sub-par, and should be avoided, if possible.

It's a cool design, and one of my only Spydercos along with a Kiwi, and I have no problem with it. Very comfy grip, a nice fine point, tip-up carry is a plus for me, and the steel is great, so there's not much I'd improve on.
