while at the hardware store today i noticed what seemed to be a real nice knife with a decent price tag. it was the display model(with a slight scratch on the sheath), and i wasnt familiar with the model, but for $60 out the door i didnt figure the price was too bad.

Nice knife, I have a gen 5 and love it. I unfortunately have a cheapo sheath with mine....need to see if I can order a nice leather one from Buck. They made all sorts of variants of that thing in their custom line I think.

You did good at that price. The rosewood model like yours came out in 2008 with a 154CM blade. In 2009 they changed to a CPM154 blade and was discontinued after 2009. I can't read any date stamp or steel type in your pictures, so I don't know which year yours was made.

There have been several versions of the Gen-5 produced as Limited Editions, Special Projects and build outs. Here's just a few. The third one down is the original Limited Edition Snakewood that was introduced in 2007. You will see that the blade is marked G-Five and all the others are marked Gen-5.

I've seen the bottom 2 and not the top 2. Is the second one down from the guitar Series? Nice photos. DM

mine says CPM154 on one side and has the arrow pointing up on the other side.('08?) although you cant see it due to my crappy photography skills it does have the Gen5 marking.
my pics dont do this knife much justice, it really is a looker.

thanks for the input and the pic Plumberdv

I just dug mine out and sure enough, it is the same as yours (2008, CPM154). I just quoted the info from the catalog, so Buck must have made the steel change sometime in 2008 after the catalogs were printed.

Woody, that's a nice Gen5 your got... Good find... Here's a pic of the only one I have so far... I got this one from my Mom for my B-Day... :)
I like the sheath that came with yours... Now I need to find one like it...

woody, is this the same hardware store that you picked up the 422 and 112 a couple years ago?

I belive that most blade 'cut outs' are pretty tough and will stand up to a lot of use/abuse..And I think they are covered under there warranty too. Now some ARE weak [the Idaho for example] and should not be used but I bet that NRA Gen 5 will take it!

The Gen 5's are great knives with a very practical blade profile and make excellent field dressing/skinning knives especially with 154CM which IMO is the cream of the crop as far as that blade steel goes.

I love the gen 5 model,I only have the 420 high carbon version, but it has been reprofiled with a convex edge and i'dd say it will stay sharp about as long as anything else i've owned ,ats,bg-42 s30v ,1095,not much edge holding difference is noticed, maybe they made some undercover knives with premium steel not marked as such.LOL
