New knives and problem with Byrd crossbill

I just bought 2 brand new knives. A manix 2 lightweight for myself and a Byrd crossbill as a gift for someone. The lockback on the crossbill is extremely stiff. Not from friction but from very high spring tension. It's actually impossible to disengage the lock by hand. We have been having to press the lock onto the corner of a table or something to get it depressed. It doesn't seem like it getting much better. But to close it is such a task it's only been opened a few times. Will this loosen up at all or should I return it? Manix on the other hand is great. Thanks.

I would try working it a bit.
Maybe some oil on the internals too.

I've had some luck with one triad lock by leaving it open for a week or so and that, along with use, smoothed out the lock. Good luck.

Is it the older generation Crossbill?

I had a Byrd Pelican and that was crazy stiff when I first got it. It took maybe a hundred openings and closings to get it smooth.

A lot, and I do mean a lot of people have trouble with back locks. 99.99% of the time it's a hand strength issue. I've personally never had a problem because I'm a greasy contortionist (mechanic;)), so I'm used to having to use two fingers to turn a rusted bolt. A Cold Steel Triad lock is almost impossible to unlock by both my niece or nephew, and they're both almost out of high school. My niece had a problem unlocking the Stretch that she got from me for a short while. I showed her I could do it with ease so she kept trying. She didn't give up and now she can open and close it with ease. It just takes some willpower and a little bit of persistence to get it working for you.

Leaving the blade halfway open does seem to work a little but a little extra hand strength doesn't hurt. You can also try using the knuckle on your thumb to press down on the lock bar, others seem to have some success with this method quite often. Once you build up the hand strength and a little muscle memory you pretty much won't notice how you close it. I hope this helped!
