(Darnit, I just got an error when I tried to post, and lost my whole post! Gotta try and re-type it now ... here goes ....)

This was totally an out-of-the-blue creative effort. Initially, it was going to be just a kubotan, just the stick by itself -- but then, "hey, let's cord-wrap it." Then I thought of adding a lanyard ... and heck, if I'm going to have a lanyard, a wrist strap might come in handy, too. Finally, I had cord left over, and before I cut it off, I made a *second* wrist loop -- which now comes in very handy!

This (rough sketch) is what I wound up with:

This item is *great* to deploy, with MANY different options. Most involve my wrist through the strap at the far end of the lanyard. With a flick of my wrist, the lanyard wraps around the back of my hand, and the stick settles nicely in my palm. From there, I can use the center wrist strap around my thumb, and the stick hangs just outside of my fist -- perfect for close-range punch/stick strikes. Drop the thumb strap, and I've increased the range to the length of the lanyard (about 6").

I'm very interested in what y'all think of it. This forum has been VERY helpful with my knife questions/discussions, and I look forward to your comments and (*gulp*) criticisms. What do I call this thing? More importantly, what can I reasonably tell an LEO it is, if asked? (Besides "It's a self-defense weapon, officer." The click you hear will be the cuffs on my wrists.)

key fobb, the loop is so you don't loose your keys while boating? It might work. of course attaching your keys to it might limit it's defensive capabilities. or maybe it would enhance them if you attached it to the longer loop (you know what i mean) then it would give you something to hold on to when using it as a swinging type weapon. I dunno, i'm just thinking out loud here.

You ought to either e-mail this page to Don Rearic or repost this in Practical Tactical, if you haven't already. If you do either, you're bound to get loads of useful feedback.

Take out the Kubotan, replace it with a Mini-Maglite. Now you have a very common flashlight with both a short lanyard and a longer lanyard. Much easier to explain than any self-defense weapon. You just added a second loop and haven't yet decided which one to keep. I'll bet the Mini-Maglite is heavier than your Kubotan too, so be careful if you swing that thing around, so you don't hit yourself in the head. (hint, hint).
