Just bought my first kukri it is an Atlanta Cutlery wwII model. Could you guys answer some questions . First what steel is this made of. The maker is Windlass cutlery. It seems like a good knife. Would I be happier with an HI product? Finally how do you guys sharpen these.

Thanks for any heo; you can give.

the HI guys use mercedes benz spring steel.
I dont know what steel they would have had in WW2.
Maybe that khukuri was govt made, in which case they might have imported it from another country...

1- Who knows. If it's an antique it's made from a good carbon steel.:D
If it's one of their new thin models It is Supposed to Be Made from a good carbon steel.
Actually they aren't really that bad of a knife. Just on the light side and dayumed sure not up to HI standard's in any way.

2- Is this one of their antique models from Nepal or one of their new thin models made by Windlass?

3- Probably, depends on whether it's antique or one of their new models.
a- If it's an antique you may not want to use it anyway.
b- If it's their Windlass made 1/4" thin models you will definitely be happier with an HI model.

4- See the FAQs or do a search on "Advanced Search" for sharpening. The subject has been discussed extensively!

Last, but not least... Welcome to the Psycho Ward, or Cantina, depending on how much of a khuk knut ya are.:D

"to try" a HI means several more will shure to follow

in defence of the atlanta model i must say it varies from knife to knife..i purchased a standard issue one 25yrs ago as a cheap truck knife to be used instead of my more expensive choppers(which were more likely to be stolen from trucks parked beside the road while hunting)..in all honestly this kuk has served me very well ...it hold a very good edge ..chops very well( after i reshaped the handle)..and has taken all manner of out and out abuse with out a single failure...now having said that mine could very well be the exception rather than the rule...i really enjoy my HI kuks but if the job is dirty or will probly result in loss or damage to the kuk..i still reach for that old reliable atlanta kuk...nuff said
