The thin leather sheath that came with my Bark River machete was just not compatible with Alaska. The steel that the machete is made from is awesome and holds an incredible edge, but it also rusts in the middle of the desert.
The stock sheath, while nice looking, was also on the flimsy side and the inside of the leather was really rough-out and held a lot of moisture.
Not a good combination.
I finally decided to have Eric Lind at Mashed Cat make up some new kydex pants, and as always, he did an incredible job.
Fits like a glove, has a very positive "snap" at the handle when bottoming out the blade into the sheath, and he added some friction to the last few inches on withdrawal, just as an added safety measure.
