New Ladyfinger vs OSL?

Hi guys,

I'm currently looking at getting a Fiddleback Ladyfinger, and I've been trying and failing to find a list and/or comparisons of the differences between the two. As best as I can tell from the photos, the OSL has a slightly taller blade profile, while the new Ladyfinger has its edge trimmed down so that the guard stands proud, making for a slightly more slender blade.

Has anyone held (or better yet, used) both versions of the Ladyfinger to confirm whether that's the only difference? I'm also curious to know the differences in task-appropriateness (if any) for the two blade profiles.

Thanks!

You've got it essentially right. The new Ladyfinger is guarded and the OS is guarded which translates to a deeper blade. Here's a good thread for you.

I personally much prefer the OSL. Being guardless is much better for my uses and I really prefer the looks of the OSL.

They also have a pretty awesome Osage over black and blue OSL available at the Blade Show booth last I saw. ;)

Thanks! There were plenty of good photos in there. On the last page, someone compared their new Ladyfingers and OSLs and found that the new ones were slightly shorter and had slimmer handles. Is that the case in general, do you know? Or is there too much variability between Fiddleback lots to make a generalization like that?

There definitely is a lot of variability from one Ladyfinger to the next (or really within any Fiddleback model). To complicate things a bit, there is “old school” and then there is what I would call “proper old school.” The latter being the original Ladyfingers, which have fatter handles that are not as tall as the new “old school” variant. At least that’s been my limited experience. Unfortunately, I no longer have any of my Ladyfingers to illustrate what I mean.

Because these are all handmade there are slight variances between all of them. Fatter handles, thinner handles, slightly longer or shorter, higher grinds, etc.

Yep nice one here at blade. Pm Phillip'e that you want to see a pic.
