So right now I have a benchmade 275 adamas I edc for heavy duty tasks, and am going to get a spyderco zdp-189 lady bug as a small edc knife. Now I need (well ....more want but you know how that goes:rolleyes:) a folding knife that can be a "beater" knife for me, so I'd like to keep the price under $100. I'd like one that could be carried concealed with heavier clothing. I would like it to have between a 4-5.5 inch blade and be a strong knife(yes I know a fixed blade is better for this, but it is illegal to carry in my state). I'm looking at an xl cold steel voyager, but I am worried about the strength of it at only 7.2 oz for a 12 1/2 in overall length. So all of this is for the question is the xl voyager a strong folder for its size and price? How does the strength of the xl voyager compare to a cold steel recon 1? Is there another large folding knife under $100 that you would recommend to me for this purpose? Thank you for your time.

without trying to sound strange or like a commercial, they wouldn't put it out if it wasn't strong - all the Demko designed and Lynn approved folders are basically looking at strength, durability, ergonomics in use, etc. first and foremost. The prototypes are tested like crazy and each batch of shipments from actual manufacturer is tested and approved.

They show a little spinewhacking and other stuff with the different Voyager sizes in this video and the XL Voyager holding 525lbs. without any sign of bending or starting to go towards disengaging - have no doubt it would do well over 600lbs.

Honestly, I would use and beat up on the Adamas and get your money's worth.

^ agree with the post above. I abuse the crap out of my Adamas, and it takes every single bit of it well.

I know how it goes wanting a new knife, so as for recommendations on a new large beater I'd say a CRKT Hammond Cruiser. It's slightly under 4', feels incredibly solid in hand and won't put you're walet through the ringer costing only 20$ on Amazon.

Some other awesome folders are the Kershaw Tremor, Spyderco Resilience, Cold Steel Recon 1, or spend a little more cash and look at the Zero tolerance 0350 and 0200.

Good luck my friend!

I guess I am one of the few that own and carry LARGE folders.

I own and use an XL and a 2XL and they are weak only in the fact they are hollow ground and then prone to breakage is used to baton wood.Or any stress against the edge.

The lock is strong enough.

I also own a Rajah I and a Rajah II and they are BEASTS but very large, they can chop with most fixed blades.

And then there is the Espada that is freakin HUGE at over 7" blade.

Its amazing BUT too large to carry [ yes even I have my limits ] and the only way to conceal it is carried SOB style.

I now have a HTM DDR 5.5 that is pricey but a good blade,I will get one with a 'bowie' style blade very soon.

The Harsey Lone Wolf large is a real beast and needs the clip changed to tip up carry [ I am a bug for that mode ].

The Benchmade Skirmish [ not made any longer ] is another true beast and I have batoned many smaller logs to prove it.

just wear gloves [ as Crazy Dave taught me ] when in any woods scenerio.

I also have a few 'smaller' folders, like the B/M Barrage and I am wearing it now.

But I am very fond of,and often carry the XL Voyager as a city blade.

I like its lightness. And it take a great shaving edge.

You Can Find A ZT 0200 For Less Than $100 On The Exchange.

But I Would Say Spyderco Military.

Or If You Want Cheap... Spyderco Resilience.

I like, and carry, large folder's. There have been some nice knives mentioned. But for a sub $100.00 knife that is going to be a beater, I think the Cold Steel you mentioned would be the one. The new CS are using linerless G-10 handles, and while I don't like this style knife (linerless), all I've read about them has been good strength, and good heavy duty use.

The Voyager handles are Grivory with liner. The Hold Out is linerless. Try Espada series as well, or the balisong lookalike (forgot the name).

for CS the large espada's are rippoffs. You can get a decent ZT for that price.

The XL Voyager, Spartan and Rajah2 would also be options if you want a folder with a >4" blade for cold steel

4" Enlan EL01 is hard to beat. I have 2 of them.
Or EL08 with better steel (reviewed here on BF)

If 4" satisfies the requrement ;)

The newer generation Cold Steel XL Voyagers offer a great deal of knife for the money and IMO are among the tougher production folders out there. While AUS-8 isn't a super steel in terms of edge retention if overall durability is the name of the game AUS-8 is in fact a bit more resistant to chipping and breakage than a lot of your higher wear resistant steels.

Thx for all the replies. I just decided to beat on my adamas, it'll look cool when the coatings half on half off. But if I see a good deal on a voyager I might picks one up:thumbup:
