who's heard about the ban in England on carrying of any knives
the law do to pass around the end of April or the first of May?

I just got a call from a customer of mine
and he'd like to make sure he gets his before that happens,,he says it looks like it will pass..

Did some googling...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4581871.stm

mostly seems to be about this ban, doctors want to ban "long pointy kitchen knives" becuase they "aren't necessary for cooking and all too often get used to stab people in domestic disputes.

there were a couple articles about australia banning some knives too, and maybe england or scotland following suit, scary stuff, there was something in there about allowing "collectors" to have knives and other exemptions for "cultural usage", but i am sure that's fun to try and deal with

hopefully nothing like that will happen here, but i am sure it's only a matter of time and liberals

Utterly and completely rediculous! Which means it will probably happen here in the states to sometime in the scary future.

Someday people will wake up and realize that the word "criminal" means they don't observe the laws! Is that too logical?

They better get rid of their cricket bats next.

Oh, and the fireplace pokers.

Okay, no axes or hatchets either.
Never mind those shrubs, honey, we'll just have to let them grow now.

Maybe they should ban umbrellas too. You never know when some looney will kill you with one.

They've already got cameras on every street over there. Can't even pick your nose without someone watching. Creepy.

has anyone ever done a survey on how many get killed with a rogue hammer, 2x4, or a base ball bat?

sorry dear you can;' use or have a nail file any longer you'll hurt yourself with it or worse, ME

It's already basicly illegal in the UK to carry a knife that has a locking or fixed blade. A small, non-locking penknife / SAK is all you can carry unless you have a "reason" and there ain't many reasons that are "reasons" if you get what I mean.

thanks Kevin
I'll have to talk to Nick again to see what the concern then? his is an avide collector from over there
and this is worrying him..?
he's in SURREY so I'm not sure if it's the same there or not?

Legislation in Surrey is the same as the rest of England & Wales... Legislation in Scotland is slightly different.

This is media scare-mongering, nothing more. I carry a Leatherman - ooh, scary locking knife - virtually every day. Good reasons in my case? I'm an engineer and I drive a Land Rover.

Espy thanks
I don't think his worry is about carrying it, the worry is getting it.
will it disappear in customs? is my concern too. TX

From what I've seen, UK Customs - damn their extortionate hides :) - are *generally* not bad. Yes, stuff does go missing occasionally, no point denying it - but in 12 years of ordering stuff from the US online I've not lost anything.

I'd be more worried about them billing me - and Parcel Force adding their tithe on as a "handling charge"... It's a really bad idea to mislabel the value, too - sometimes they want receipts.

Added - there have been attempts at trying to claim one or two knives are "illegal" by overzealous officious individuals, but all of the incidents I know about they've backed down. We have weird legislation in some areas - the following are illegal to purchase, make (hmph!), hire etc. etc., so would be confiscated if found (list limited to just sharp & pointy):

Automatics (although strangely, not assisted openers. Yet)
Balisong or butterfly knife
Push dagger
Shuriken, shaken, or death star
Handclaw
Footclaw
Swordstick
Kusari gama (rope, cord, wire or chain fastened at one end to a sickle)
Kyoketsu shoge (rope, cord, wire or chain fastened at one end to a hooked knife)
Belt buckle knife
Disguised knife
Stealth knife

Great if you can add any to this as time goes on please do, I'll put this on my sticky for others in the same boat..Thanks

Dan, maybe the customer id just trying to get you to deliver the knife faster? :D wink wink nudge nudge

Include an accurate invoice with the order and list the knife as a hunting knife or utilty knife or cutlery and insure the damn thing! Don't list it as a terrorist knife for mass destruction! :p

BTW Most of the knives on the list above are also forbidden in Germany, except some automatic knives are allowed here.

NP - there's a better article on UK law by Danzo on British Blades, he's the lawyer - I'm not. Nor do I play one on television.

Peter

I would reccomend checking the law forum on Britishblades.

I haven't heard anything about any new laws being passed re. knives being banned. We already have enough bans thanks. The last news story about knives was the doctors calling for pointy kitchen knives to be banned but nothing has come of that yet. If there was a new law coming in you can bet I would be yelling and swearing about it by now and looking to leave the country ASAP. ;)
