Well, I've been trying to learn better control at the grinder, so I'm making some small stock removal knives, to help practice that control.

This one is the first, I made it with intent of being a nice little knife for cutting up leather. A nice small blade, with an almost squared off point for cutting down into the leather. You'll notice the bevels aren't the same on both sides. That was intentional, I like the look of a flat above the bevel, so I stopped the bevel partway on the side I put my mark, and on the other ran it all the way up to help thin down the blade more (not traditional I know, but I wanted to try it).

Any thoughts/critiques are as always desired.

1084 blade
Stabilized mesquite burl handle (found it in a bargain box at Blade last year, can't believe how nice it looks)

and a kydex sheath to keep it safe with my other leatherworking tools (my first kydex working, nice stuff).

I like it! Looks like it could make a nice little patch knife for shooting muzzleloaders also.

Hi Young Smith w/ an Old Anvil,

Good idea, both the knife design/usage and the grinding practice. I need to do more of that too. In the interest of that practice, why not try to do the same bevel grind on both sides with the same flats at the spine and the same shoulders at the ricasso? I understand your interest in variation, but that would be more of a challenge to accomplish and more in the spirit of developing your grinding skills. By-the-way, you might get a lot more of the type feedback you're looking for in the maker's forum. Those guys are there specifically for this type of dialog.

Although it's not stated anywhere in any of the forum descriptions, I understand this forum is primarily where collectors (mostly) discuss pretty high end knives and knife makers. Again, as I understand it, they're appreciative of developing makers at various levels, but in this forum they're focusing on figuring out who the front runners are and what customs have and will have trade value. There have been some lengthy heart searching discussions to this effect in some recent threads, which have been helping me sort this out (somewhat).

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn.

I'm jealous hearing you were at Blade. Lucky guy!

All the best, Phil
