..well. ..I'm not *making* leather per say, but I do have a question. What gives leather that movie-cowboy look? ..the kind that looks well oiled and rich? Is it the type of leather? The treatment and tanning of the leather? ..or a combo of both? I have this vision of a thick ranger belt w/ a sheath and a possibles pouch out of thick, richly colored leather.. ..but I know nothing more than the basics. I'm looking to start this project soon because its been bugging me for awhile.. ..is there a book or site people recommend for beginners? I don't want a bunch of tooling or embossing.. ..just that *heavy* look.

I would say an antiquer jell gives is that look. You can buy it at Tandy. They way it works is you dye your leather then squirt some of this onto a soft cotton cloth like an old under shirt and just wipe it on thick then you want to quickly come and whipe it off. You can play around with it in different colors and different techniques and get several different looks.
Hope this helps
Matt
