Looks like Leatherman is doing what we wanted all along: combining the tools in both in the Charge Ti and XTi, while upgrading the 154CM in the clip-point knife to S30V. Should be out in January of 2007. They'll also be changing the handles on the current Charge's to 6061 aluminum, while the new TTi keeps the titanium handles.

(Pic taken from an online store. Several online stores are already showing these, although they won't be out for a couple of months.)

Hopefully they will still offer them in 154. I usually dont use the blade on the Leatherman very much. Leatherman tools are very low maintanence because of stainless steel tools but this S30V blade will need lots of attention to stay ontop of the rust.

this is kinda distressing after finally picking up a Charge Ti on Friday

it doesn't sound like they are ditching the old ones, just adding a new higher-end one

i guess i'm not that exited about basically paying almost another $50 for s30v though

I'm not familiar with S30V steel. What are its good points and bad points?

Hello all,

With 1.45% carbon and 4% vanadium, this steel, properly heat treated, should form enough carbides to be harder than the hobs of hell. Just don't let it get dull before you hit the Sharpmaker as it will be very tough to sharpen. As a metallurgist, hunter and knife nut, I'm looking forward to this in the tool and in the recently announced Leatherman Kalmath and Steens hunting knives.

Cheers -Joe;)

Wow and I thought they reached high with the cm154.......I saw the new model at a internet dealers site and the asking price was $153.
I wonder how the S30V will hold up to the abuse the average multi tool goes through....see the S30V thread in the general discussion forums.

Okay, as near as I can sort out from all the sniping and bickering in the thread above, S30V steel is:
a custom steel produced specifically for knife blades,
is derived from powdered metal,
is considered a "stainless" steel,
is very tough,
and has gotten a reputation for chipping at the cutting edge.
(Sounds like this last issue may or may not be deserved.)

Hmmmmm..........I guess I agree with yermom above; for the S30V blade to be worth an extra $50 asking price, I better be able to whittle railway spikes out of iron bars with it!

No more Leatherman's for me their customer service is not good!

I will stay with Victorinox!

Geez, as if the Charge isn't expensive enough. I wouldn't have one if our company didn't sell Leatherman. We have since discontinued Leatherman because they doubled their order minumum for our tier, and we don't sell that many. I feel fortunate to have a Charge, even if it is a 154CM blade. Gut hook is hard to touch up, though - so tiny...
