New Life for an Old 110?

My friends--amongst my 110 collection are a couple of older ones--the kind with the squared edges and only two rivets on the handles. Blade stamped "BUCK" over "U.S.A." One is a little funky, opens stiffly, got a few dings... Do you think if I sent it in to Buck that they might revitalize it? What would it be like to have new blade, possibly of a better steel, put in? On another thread here, I was advised that older 110s might not be a good fit with a new blade.

Or is this idea sacrilege to a collector? Any opinions?

buck can not replace the blade on any pre 4 dot knives.
but if ou send it it and it has a good blade they will clean and buff it up and sharpen it for you at about 5 bucks
however... if you send it in for a new blade they will replace the whold knife and if you ask for it back they will mark it and send it to you if you want it for semental reasons but it wont be cleaned at all...

What Dave said is exactly the case. I think it has a lot to do with the thicker blades on the newer knives. You may try to talk to Leroy Remer about a blade replacement....find and older beater that has a better blade and have him do the swap.

Just to confirm--if an old 110 is functionally fine, just stiff opening, and tarnished, and with a dull edge, I can send it to Buck and get it "restored" for a mere five bucks?

Do I need to send a note with it, or send it to a particular person?

Stiff opening, tarnish, dull edge....

You can fix all of that your self. WD40 saturation while working the blade and intermittently blowing it out with an air compressor will/should free up a stiff dirty blade. Brasso on the tarnish will shine it up and with some effort will take out scratches. A sharpening system like the lansky will do the edge.

However,,,it kinda sounds like it could be useless.... So send it to me and I will send you a new Idaho. :D :D

Oh,,, your shipping and cost of Buck cleaning it up might run $12 to $15.

If you gonna collect old Bucks, might as well get into the "cleanin em up" routine :D :D

None of those seem like real issues to me either. But I'm sure it must be very annoying to you. You're gonna have to get used to the tarnish cleaining...tarnish on, tarnish off, tarnish on, tarnish off...you know, that whole wax on, wax off Zen gig.

But be aware, that Larry is trying squeeze ya!!! I will send you one 'Ho and a 198 Mantis to take that crummy knife off your hands.

Before I knew about old blades, I sent in a two dot that the blade was essentally destroyed with no collector value, least to me. I had asked Buck if it could be saved/salvaged and asked for an estimate and said that it had no sentimental value.. Was in my early Buck collecting days before I understood about their warranty.. Interestingly enough it came back all nice and shiny and had a brand new four dot blade in it with no charge. Kinda freaked me out. Must have still been some old blades laying around somewhere. That was back before Idaho.

I think I would leave it as it is. From the little you describe, yours is pre 1972. Get you a new one to use.

Yous Guys just crack me up.. :D :D

Before the mods jump on us for running an illegal bidding operation, I will withdraw.. Like I really need any more of those versions.

TIZWIN.... Darryl and Trax can probably give you good tips on how to refurbish that oldie yourself. With all of their past advice I have managed to clean up a couple of sirusly abused ones and they look good. Just mad that I didn't do a fore and after pic session.

But you might just want to polish it up some and post some pics. Then we can resume bidding :D :D

Should you still decide to go ahead and send it to Buck. Address it to Joe Houser or att Joe Houser.

Do not address it to Buck Knives. (This invites postal theft if they see knife.)
Say BKInc instead. Send it confirmed or certified mail, which cost more.

Be sure the note says exactly what you want them to do.

I bought an old 110 with a broken blade at a garage sale for $5.00.
It looked pretty beat.
I sent it off to Buck for a blade up grade, ($35.00) and for 40 bucks and shipping, Buck replaced the blade with premium steel and cleaned up the knife like new.
What a deal!
Porky

...Great deal there porky. I'm sure the knife is fantastic. What type of steel did you get in your "new" knife??...How's 'bout some pictures?...:D
