Or check out my new Harness Jack.
I got this 64 Camillus US Scout from a fellow forum member in the PIF thread over in general knife discussion. He said it had a bad spring for the screw driver & can opener & I figured I could remove the bad spring & the SC/CO & make a harness jack out of it so I asked for it.
Well,it was a bit of a PITA,but I got it done with a minimum of cussing.:D
This was my first slip joint project & I'm just glad I didn't have to deal with some nice covers like bone or stag or I would have broken them for sure.:o
Hats off to Glenn & others that work on slippies.:thumbup:I now have a better appreciation for what you do.
Anyways,I ground down the pins heads on one side with my trusty Dremil & had to make a punch small enough to fit the pin holes out of a 5/64th drill bit.I just broke it in half & used the shank end to drive the pins out.Actually I just drove the pins out far enough to get the SC & CO off, then tapped them back through.
Just a heads up if anyone wants to try this, the SS covers are soft! They bend real easy when reassembling & getting them to line up on the pins isn't easy because there is spring tension on one side while trying to align the pin into the opposing hole in the cover.
So,I got it all back together & just needed to grind the pins down to where a 1/16" or so stuck up & then peened them down with a Ball Peen hammer.
Then with a little tweaking here & there I had myself a new old HJ from an old GI Scout.
It ain't pretty, but it is serviceable & the remaining spring is good & strong so the spear & punch blades really take a pull to get them open & have great snap closing.(think bear trap)

Now to make handles for the screw driver & bottle opener.

The spare parts with half the broken spring on the bottom.

very col, Myke, looks like you did a good job to me!

punches re useful little devils ain't they

Hey, that looks great Mykel! Nice slim profile now. Careful, knife modding is highly addictive. You'll find yourself shopping more for junkers and basket cases than actual good condition knives.

Great job!

Busted, already looking at lots on ebay Glenn, but I still need to get a head spinner. My first attempt to make one failed so I chamfered the holes in the scale for the peened pin to flow into.
Looks darn good!
Thanks John.

Nice job Mykel!

I have one of those old GI knives - it belonged to my wife's father, and my mother in law gave it to me when she discovered I love pocket knives.

Nicely done!

I have a Winchester 2991 with waterfall celluloid handles that I believe are deteriorating and off-gassing which is discoloring/rusting the blades. I've been considering trying to replace them with some wood, but don't think I'm up to that challenge just yet.

The funny thing is when I was in the Marines in the late 70s-80s the supply guy for our shop would occasionally get a box of the SS US scouts or TL-29s & pass them out to everyone, but I carried my Vic Champ so I always passed on them.I wish I had a couple each of those old knives now.

Thanks Derek.
I'm thinking that while you decide what to do with the Winchester you should remove that old celluloid to prevent further damage.
And contact Glennbad about the new covers,he does great work on slippies.

Derek, I have a camillus that had "corroded" scales and only learned about "outgassing" when i asked about it in the traditional forum, apparently it's bad for the metals parts and it's best to take the off , having said that my little camillus has been sitting in spare parts ever since, I need to practice and learn more Ive decided before doing much more with folders so what do i know :)

good luck!
