Just noticed in the new 2014 catalog and verified by Benchmade's website... Benchmade is using a NEW stainless steel material for their "Liners".

Directly from Benchmade's website:

Liners
6AL 4V-TITANIUM: Considered an exotic metal alloy (Titanium + 6% Aluminum + 4% Vanadium) with an excellent strength to weight ratio, which offers exceptional performance in a knife. Titanium is corrosion resistant to natural elements as well as many industrial chemicals.

410SS STAINLESS STEEL: A common knife grade with low carbon, high chromium content steel which offers excellent bend toughness and wear ability. It offers excellent corrosion resistant characteristics as well. Also used in handles.

All previous Stainless steel liners were listed as as 420J Stainless. So, a question for you metallurgists; is 410SS better than 420J or was this a cost saving measure?

The only difference I can see is that 410 has slightly lower Chromium content. It's still stainless, but that's the only difference. Not sure about strength or durability, though.

It might also be done as a cost saving measure. Interesting, I'd like to hear more about any potential performance improvements it may offer.

I wouldn't be surprised. It won't make much of a performance difference, but their decision to cut corners doesn't sit well with me at all.

BM liners were 410SS back in the day. If you look at old catalogs, the Leopards, the mini-AFCK, and the 705 and 710 among others had them. The move to 420J2 occured sometime in the 00's when I was checked out. Regardless, 410 has great wear characteristics and stainlesness to the extent that I don't think anyone will notice any difference.
