Disassembled my new WC 21 (born on August 26, 2015) to remove the lanyard pin and noticed a new lockside washer. It's not the typical smaller circular washer with holes, instead it's shaped like a gear/flower (whichever you prefer). I wish I had snapped a shot of the washer before assembling, it probably would have been beneficial...:hopelessness:

That all being said, it appears to be tad more "refined", as this 21 was a free-dropper out of the box. Not sure if I just got a "dialed" one or if the new washer design reduces resistance.

I have been using this new style washer in my EDC for a couple of months now. It is still somewhat early to tell but as of now I do prefer the previous generation much more than this new style. This flavor seems to collect gunk much more easily, which was one of my original fears. This is the second time I have taken it apart because of the accumulation of gunk. And no, I do not use too much CRK grease; I apply just a very light film with an artist's paint brush. It is also a bear to clean as the holes are now square and the gunk likes to stick in the corners making it tough to remove. I almost broke out the brake cleaner to get it clean.

I have noticed the blade does become a bit choppy when closing because of gunk build up. I don't know if this has anything to do with the washer as I only notice this when the detent ball is on the tang. If I hold the lockbar off of the blade, it is not there. I do know that I did not have this issue prior to getting the knife fitted with the new washer.

When it is freshly clean and lubed, I can tell no difference in smoothness between this and my 21's of the previous washer style.

I noticed the same thing when I took mine apart..... I haven't noticed any difference between this and the old style washer though and I've had mine apart twice now. That choppiness you feel is the resistance of the detent ball riding on the blade. A dab of grease on the back tang of the blade will help smooth this out!

Yup. I noticed it trapped much more dust/lint. The main thing I do not like about the new lockside washer is that its harder to tell which side of washer should be facing the tang.

New bushing pivot CRKs always trick me. Out of the box, super smooth, free dropping blade. Oil change and reassembly, and it's like "oh...so now you need a little break-in time...".
